HISTORY OF THE REALM

History & Epochs

The Realm remembers its past in fragments. Jamith’s work and the surviving words of Rahim show that every age inherits both truth and distortion.

Before the Clans

The oldest surviving traditions describe Rahim, Semprel, Earthmen and Ethermen, and a sixfold spectrum of power. Much of this history survives only indirectly through The Mind of Rahim, ancient liturgy, and the memories preserved by the Six Aspects.

The Epoch of Spectrum

Texts from the Epoch of Spectrum remember the Aspects openly, preserving the older language of Rahim’s Eyes, Hands, and Feet and a world in which spectrum imagery had not yet been reduced to competing Clan identities.

The Fall and the World Fissure

Ancient accounts connect Rahim’s fall with the catastrophic scar now known as the World Fissure. Pure Essence later rises from its depths, turning a theological wound into the foundation of the Realm’s magical economy.

Rise of the Clans & the Great Purge

Over generations, old service-oriented communities become political institutions with noble bloodlines, guarded Keeps, armies, and competing forms of worship. The Great Purge destroys much of the older record, including most copies of The Mind of Rahim, leaving later generations dependent on fragments and priestly interpretation.

The Penultimate Age

A surviving prophecy names the era immediately before the promised final age as the Penultimate Age. By the opening of The Hunger, political decay, magical dependence, inequality, abandoned settlements, and conflict among the Clans have pushed the Realm toward collapse. The prophecy also frames the age through human pride, extraordinary magical achievement, the ancient binding of Earthmen and Ethermen, and the expectation of a great undoing before Rahim’s return.

The Wrath & the Remnant

The Wrath destroys the old Keeps and breaks the surviving Clan order. In its immediate aftermath, the Remnant gathers human survivors under Sven’s banner, offering one powerful but deeply coercive answer to the collapse.

The Flight

The Flight fractures chronology itself: Azil experiences only days beyond the Realm while nearly fifty years pass at home. Survivors eventually date events from his departure, turning one man’s absence into the central historical marker of a new era.

After the Flight — Major Book Three Spoilers

  • The Watch — survivors wait for signs of Azil’s return while the old Clan order continues to break apart.
  • The Valley — displaced communities gather, adapt, and attempt to survive without the institutions that once defined the Realm.
  • The Loss — death, disappearance, and the Dark vessel’s expansion turn temporary crisis into generational trauma.
  • The Remainder — survivors reorganize around missions rather than hereditary Clans. See The Realm After the Wrath.
  • The Resistance — Reclaimers, Defenders, and other groups begin systematic opposition to the Dark vessel.
  • The Vigilant — a formal order develops around preparedness, restraint, and faith in the Light vessel’s eventual return.
  • The Return — Azil reappears to find a Realm that has aged without him and a population that no longer shares his assumptions about authority.
  • The Dawn — Sanctuary and Citadel, Light and Dark vessels, the Bone King, the final Bell of Creation, and Rahim’s restoration bring the Penultimate Age to its culminating transformation.

From Clan History to Shared History

The final historical movement does not restore one old Clan to supremacy. New Scarlatti Keep, the Realm Museum, and Rahim’s Throne preserve multiple traditions at once, suggesting that the next age will remember the past as a shared inheritance rather than as competing dynastic myths.
