EPOCHS OF THE REALM

The Penultimate Age

The age immediately before the promised Dawn is defined by extraordinary magic, fractured memory, human pride, catastrophe, and the recovery of truths the Realm had nearly forgotten.

A Named Late Age

The term Penultimate Age comes from a surviving passage of The Mind of Rahim. The text describes it as an age opened after many earlier ages of humanity and immediately preceding a final age in which Rahim would return and the old order would be transformed.

How the Ancient Text Describes It

The prophecy frames the age as one of enormous human achievement and spiritual distortion. Humanity has united what the text says should not have been united, works mighty wonders through magic, places confidence in armies, cities, weapons, wealth, and its own wisdom, and loses much of the knowledge by which earlier people understood Rahim.

Because the cycle repeatedly demonstrates that surviving scripture has been copied, divided, interpreted, and sometimes manipulated by mortal hands, the encyclopedia treats this passage as an important ancient witness rather than a neutral omniscient description of every event.

The Two Peoples Become One

One of the prophecy’s defining claims is that humanity has merged the two peoples created by Rahim: the Earthmen and Ethermen. Later discoveries surrounding Sarchat, Juliana, Hunger, and Thirst reveal the historical reality behind that mysterious line and show how deeply the ancient binding shaped ordinary human life.

The Crown & the Great Undoing

The same passage connects the end of the age with the three sacred jewels of Rahim’s Crown. The jewels are powerful enough to require Hyper-tolerants, and the early quest assumes that returning them and performing the foretold work will usher in the final age.

Wrath, Flight & the Long Road to Dawn

The characters initially expect a relatively direct transition from prophecy to restoration. Instead, the Penultimate Age includes the Wrath, the destruction of the old Keeps, the rise of the Remnant, the Flight, decades of survival and resistance, the rise of Light and Dark vessels, the threat of the Bone King, and a much deeper reconsideration of what divine wholeness actually requires.

Why “Penultimate” Matters

Penultimate means next-to-last. The name therefore defines the age by expectation: it is the difficult period immediately before the Dawn. That expectation drives prophets, scholars, zealots, vessels, and ordinary survivors alike—sometimes toward faith and service, and sometimes toward disastrous attempts to force history to fulfill itself.

A Historical Period After the Dawn

Fifty years after the cycle’s final conflict, people openly refer to the previous era as the Penultimate Age. Its events are carved into the public art of New Scarlatti Keep, and its artifacts are preserved in the Realm Museum. What began as prophecy has become history.
