AFTER THE WRATH
The Remnant
Human survivors gather under Sven’s banner after the Wrath—but survival becomes the foundation for a dangerous new political identity.
Book Two spoilers: this entry describes the human faction that rises immediately after the Wrath.
The Survivors of the Wrath
In the devastated Realm, the word remnant first describes the humans who survive the Wrath. Many are displaced, desperate, and willing to band together simply to stay alive. Some become marauders; others seek settlements or leaders capable of imposing order.
Sven’s Banner
Sven, now vessel of the Emerald Aspect, gathers a major body of survivors around himself and openly claims the title Lord of the Remnant. From Emerald Keep and the lands surrounding the Eternal Well, he attempts to unite surviving humanity under a single command.
One Folk Through Fear
Sven’s vision of unity is coercive. He channels grief over the Wrath into hostility toward Mals, casts them as the cause of humanity’s suffering, and presents the Remnant as the chosen human people who must destroy a common enemy. His rhetoric turns survival into exclusion.
The Army at the Fissure
The Remnant becomes a true military force. Sven’s army holds one side of the World Fissure against the Revs, while his supporters recover one of the Seven Bells of Creation and treat it as a visible sign of divine favor.
Remnant vs. Remainder
The Remnant should not be confused with the later Remainder. The Remnant is closely associated with Sven’s post-Wrath human movement and his claim to authority. The Remainder develops later as a looser survival-and-resistance network organized around missions such as the Reclaimers, Defenders, and Vigilant.
A Failed Answer to Collapse
The Remnant demonstrates one of the cycle’s recurring dangers: catastrophe can erase old institutions without erasing the impulses that made them harmful. Sven offers unity after the Clans, but he rebuilds hierarchy, inherited grievance, and religious certainty around himself.
