The Cantifold
How My Stories Connect
Most of my stories are part of the Cantifold, a shared universe made up of many worlds, ages, realms, and roads between them. Each series is designed to stand on its own, but attentive readers may recognize recurring places, powers, people, and principles that reveal a much larger creation behind the individual adventures.
This guide begins with the clearest published connections and will grow as more corners of the Cantifold are explored.
What Is the Cantifold?
The Cantifold is not a single kingdom or timeline. It is the greater framework containing the worlds in which many of my stories take place, along with the spaces, pathways, and powers that connect them. A character in one series may understand only one small part of that structure, while another series reveals the same reality from a different angle.
That means two books can feel very different—one built around enchanted music boxes and another around living chess pieces—while still sharing the same deeper geography and laws of creation.
Spoiler note: The overview below identifies shared cosmology and recurring figures. It avoids major plot resolutions, while the linked encyclopedia entries may contain fuller series spoilers.
The Canticle Kingdom and Chess Quest
The most visible bridge in the Cantifold currently runs between The Canticle Chronicles and Chess Quest. Their heroes face different conflicts, but they travel through parts of the same larger universe.
Middlespace: the Road Between Worlds
Both series enter Middlespace, the pale intermediary realm connecting separate worlds. In The Canticle Chronicles, it links Earth, the Canticle Kingdom, Burgenring, and other realms. In Chess Quest, it serves as a gateway, training ground, reservoir of order energy, and road on which travelers can be redirected. The characters describe and use it differently, but they are encountering the same larger passage between worlds.
Centerspace: the Heart of Creation
Beyond those roads lies Centerspace, the center of the worlds. Its inhabitants understand how worlds are formed, sustained, transferred, and sometimes allowed to end. The Canticle books introduce its emissaries and custodians; Chess Quest opens the door wider, revealing its city, its Masters, the nature of creation energy, and the music made when order and chaos are woven together.
Gian: One Person, Two Series
The strongest personal connection is Gian. Readers of The Canticle Chronicles learn how Richard becomes a citizen and custodian of Centerspace. In Chess Quest, Gian appears as a Master of Centerspace who guides Rich and Mallory toward truths their own world has forgotten. His presence makes the shared universe more than a repeated place-name: it is a continuing history.
Darkespace and the Danger Beyond the Roads
Both series also recognize Darkespace, a realm associated with chaos, exile, corruption, and powers that threaten the ordered worlds. Its role is not identical in every story, but its recurrence shows that the darkness facing one kingdom belongs to a wider cosmology.
Music as a Language of Creation
Music is more than decoration in the Cantifold. In the Canticle books, melody can awaken magic, shape identity, open pathways, and alter kingdoms. In Chess Quest, the Sovereign’s Song is the music produced when order and chaos are woven together—the newborn cry of created worlds. The two series reveal different expressions of the same idea: creation has a structure, and that structure can be heard.
Recurring Laws of the Cantifold
- Worlds are separate, but not isolated. Roads, doors, artifacts, dreams, and appointed guides can bridge them.
- Great power is restrained by rules. Custodians and Masters can guide, redirect, and preserve, but mortal characters must still choose and act.
- Creation depends on balance. Order and chaos, preservation and change, music and silence all become creative forces rather than simple labels.
- Objects can carry worlds. Music boxes, stones, doors, and other artifacts are often pieces of a much larger architecture.
- Every series sees only part of the whole. Apparent contradictions may reflect limited knowledge, different eras, or different cultures interpreting the same reality.
More Worlds to Map
The Canticle–Chess Quest connection is the clearest place to begin, not the end of the map. Other stories occupy additional worlds, eras, and corners of the Cantifold. As the encyclopedia grows, this page will collect confirmed crossings, recurring figures, shared artifacts, cosmological echoes, and clues that show how the larger universe fits together.
