Who Is Axertes?

Axertes is a citizen of the Centerspace, the realm at the heart of creation. He appears to Richard as a towering armored figure whose physical body is only a container for something far greater. His pursuit of the Many-Named One reveals that the villain’s conflict extends far beyond the Canticle Kingdom or Earth.

The Many-Named One is an exile from Axertes’s realm, and Axertes has been sent to prevent that exile from breaking the laws that keep the different spaces of creation in order. Yet immense power does not give him unlimited freedom to act.

Power Bound by Rules

Axertes and his people do not enter the Outer Realms lightly. Even in the Middlespace, rules limit how directly he can interfere. He therefore needs a willing person from the worlds at risk to carry out actions he is forbidden to perform himself.

That restriction turns Richard—an elderly man who never imagined himself as a cosmic hero—into Axertes’s chosen agent. Their partnership expands the series’ scale while preserving its central idea that meaningful choices must still be made by people inside the struggle.

Richard and the Centerspace

After Richard gives everything he has in the battle against the Many-Named One, Axertes welcomes him into the Centerspace as a new citizen. The reward transforms Richard’s ending into a beginning and establishes Axertes as more than a distant authority: he becomes Richard’s guide into a much larger existence.
