A Portal of Pure Darkness
Darkespace is reached through a portal unlike the bright doors of ordinary world travel. The opening is described as pure darkness, admitting no light. To the Many-Named One, it offers refuge from beings powerful enough to destroy him.
Prison and Power Source
Gian identifies Darkespace as a prison containing the vilest beings from many worlds. The Many-Named One does not merely survive there: he absorbs their evil and adds it to his own, emerging too powerful for straightforward destruction.
Why the Custodians Choose Capture
By the time of The Skyward Isle, the power gathered in Darkespace has changed the scale of the threat. The Custodians of the Worlds conclude that the Many-Named One must be weakened and imprisoned rather than simply defeated in battle.
Darkespace Reaches Outward
The danger does not remain sealed inside the prison. Dark creatures later emerge through corruption in Middlespace, inviting travelers to enter Darkespace and surrender their names to their master. The prison has become part of an expanding network of contamination.
