The DEM — Deus Ex Machina
An ancient network of gears capable of collecting impossible amounts of magic and turning a convenient solution into a catastrophe.
Artifact Record
- Full name: Deus Ex Machina
- Classification: Modular magical machine
- Original form: Three interlocking letter-shaped sections
- Component count: Twenty-one gears after fragmentation
- Known wielders: Felgarath and J.D.
- Primary danger: Magical absorption, amplification, and corruption
Overview
The DEM is one of the most powerful and least responsibly named artifacts in Beandom history. Its full title, Deus Ex Machina, is represented physically by three interlocking sections shaped like the letters D, E, and M. When joined, those sections form a working magical machine rather than an ornamental monogram.
The device can draw in enormous quantities of mystical energy, channel that power through its moving gears, and place reality-altering force in the hands of whoever is holding it. The machine does not appear to supply wisdom, restraint, or a helpful instruction booklet.
The Three Original Pieces
The dark musician Felgarath assembled the three famous sections after recovering them from suitably unreasonable locations. The D, or Deus, came from the Supposedly Bottomless Pit. The E, or Ex, had been frozen within the Cavern of Endless Chill. The M, or Machina, was found in the Celestial Legion within the eye of the Eversurge.
Sir Roderick 3RG recognized the relic before Felgarath completed it, which was fortunate. His attempt to stop the assembly was less fortunate. Once activated, the DEM flooded the arena with violent light and stripped magical energy from those caught within its reach.
From Three Sections to Twenty-One Gears
The DEM was not truly destroyed when its first great activation ended. The force of the resulting explosion separated it into twenty-one component gears and opened breaches between the mortal world and the Netherworld. The gears scattered across both realms, transforming a single impossible problem into twenty-one smaller impossible problems.
Each gear retains a portion of the whole machine’s power. A lone piece may look less threatening than the completed DEM, but it can still radiate magic, communicate in unexpected ways, and attract everyone from heroes to tyrants to supernatural administrators offering suspiciously generous rewards.
Known Powers and Properties
- Magical absorption: The assembled DEM can pull energy from powerful magical beings and artifacts.
- Amplification: Its interlocking gears concentrate power far beyond what an ordinary wielder could safely command.
- Modularity: Individual gears remain active after the original machine is broken apart.
- Dimensional disruption: Its fragmentation is connected to rifts between realms.
- Technological compatibility: In the modern era, one gear proves alarmingly willing to communicate with computers.
Return in the Age of Discovery
Centuries after the Beandom’s heroic age, a large gear falls to Earth in a crater glowing with purple energy. J.D., now living in the modern world, recognizes the danger and attempts to keep the relic from less scrupulous hands.
The gear transmits a message in binary code that becomes an uppercase prophecy. J.D.’s effort to combine ancient magic with modern computing leads to a portable interface and a synthetic companion named Gopat. This is approximately the point at which “put it safely in a box” ceases to be an available plan.
Why It Matters
The DEM connects all three major eras of Beandom history. It helps define the catastrophic end of an early quest, drives the race for scattered gears, and returns when the magical past begins breaking into the technological present. It also embodies a recurring Beandom lesson: power that solves every immediate problem tends to create a much larger problem immediately afterward.
Its history is tied to Felgarath, the Netherworld, the fall of magical realms, J.D.’s immortality, and the renewed struggle surrounding the Sunken Lands. The machine is therefore not merely a weapon. It is a hinge between ages.

A machine that can solve anything is usually operated by someone who should not be allowed to solve everything.

The DEM’s fragmentation tears open rifts into the Netherworld and scatters gears through both realms. Centuries later, a returned gear and modern computer interface help J.D. reach the Sunken Lands and rediscover the buried Beandom.

The DEM in the Dragonlord’s Hands
In the Book Three post-credit revelation, Felgarath tells the Needler that he has secured the DEM and needs only a suffix power source to activate it. The disclosure connects Nathaniel’s reconnaissance mission to a larger campaign against Cantus, Klingen, and the Beandom.

Twenty-One Gears, Five Final Locations and Plan V
The arena explosion separates the DEM into twenty-one functioning gears and scatters them across two realms. Bell’s Midnight Mirror locates the five pieces still concealed in the mortal world, while the Netherking offers a restored life for each gear returned. Once the components are reassembled, Jackdaw’s Plan V uses Mount Ominous and a future-borrowed rocket to remove the machine from the world before any claimant can control it.

From Deus Ex Machina to GOPAT
A glowing fragment of the DEM falls to Earth in 1984 carrying a binary Uppercase Prophecy. J.D. connects it to a personal computer, creating GOPAT: a synthetic intelligence capable of programming spells, analyzing cosmic information, and transforming J.D.’s left hand into an expanding silver magical interface.
