The Twenty-One Gears and the Gift of Life
Scattered machine · resurrection bargain · memory-priced mirror
Twenty-One Smaller Impossible Problems
The explosion at the Battle of the Bards does not destroy the DEM. It breaks the machine into twenty-one active gears and tears open rifts between the mortal world and the Netherworld. Some pieces fall into each realm, setting heroes, villains, ghosts, and supernatural rulers on competing hunts.
One Gear, One Life
Grimma announces the Netherking’s bargain: return a gear and he will release one chosen soul back into mortal life. The offer promises the impossible, but every participant brings a different list. Sir Roderick seeks Bell; Felgarath seeks Gwyneth; Mercurius seeks former victims; and Grimma seeks enough power to change the balance of both realms.
The Midnight Mirror
Sir Roderick uses a dark enchanted mirror to speak with Bell in the Netherworld. Her wish allows her to see through disguises and locate the five gears still hidden in the mortal realm: Worstashire, an old Dormor manor, the royal palace, Dornfang Forest, and the abandoned EBI headquarters. The mirror’s price is personal: every use steals one of Roderick’s memories of Bell.
The Final Machine
The scattered quests eventually reunite enough components for the DEM to be assembled again. That apparent solution immediately attracts Grimma, the Netherking, and every remaining claimant. Jackdaw’s Plan V attempts to remove the machine from the world entirely by launching it from Mount Ominous aboard a future-made rocket.
Chronicler’s note: The gears are McGuffins with consequences. Each promises life, power, or restoration while asking its seeker to reveal whom—or what—they value most.
