J.D.’s Ghost Watch

A colored spirit-watch that lets an immortal wizard call old friends back into the conversation.

Device Record

  • Classification: Magical device of uncertain manufacture

Overview

J.D.’s ghost watch looks closer to an inexpensive modern accessory than an ancient wizard’s relic. Its band is marked with brightly colored spots. Pressing selected spots summons the spirits of companions who died long before J.D.’s current adventures began.

The device belongs to J.D. Zaubermann, the later identity of Jackdaw—the washed-up wizard, narrator, prophecy interpreter, and inconveniently immortal survivor of the Age of Heroes. For someone who has outlived nearly everyone he once knew, the watch is both a practical magical tool and a portable bridge to the past.

How It Works

Each colored point appears to correspond to a particular spirit or group of spirits. J.D. activates the device by pressing the appropriate spots on the watchband. The summoned dead then manifest nearby as visible, speaking, ethereal figures capable of offering conversation, advice, criticism, and heroic poses.

The exact construction of the watch has not been fully recorded. It may be an enchanted modern object, a magical artifact disguised as technology, or one of J.D.’s own adaptations after centuries of changing fashions. The Encyclopedia therefore classifies it as a magical device of uncertain manufacture, which is scholarly language for “Jackdaw has not provided a straight answer.”

Known Summonings

Sir Roderick 3RG

Roderick appears as ethereal as any properly deceased knight while retaining his booming greeting, heroic confidence, and instinct to recommend the most direct course of action.

Bellissimo

Bellissimo remains radiant, perceptive, and willing to comment on the condition of any realm she visits. Death has not made her more tolerant of poor planning or poor interior decoration.

Why It Matters

The ghost watch makes the Beandom’s history personal. The Age of Heroes is not merely a collection of stories J.D. remembers; its people can briefly stand beside him again. Their presence allows later adventures to consult eyewitnesses, preserve old relationships, and show how legends look after centuries of retelling.

It also reveals the cost of J.D.’s immortality. The watch is useful, often funny, and sometimes comforting, but every activation reminds him that he remains physically present while his companions belong to another side of existence. His friends can answer. They cannot simply stay.

Return to the Beandom

In a later adventure, J.D. uses the watch while exploring a transformed remnant of the Beandom. Sir Roderick and Bellissimo recognize their old world, though not its altered condition. Their observations help connect the underground ruins and faded magic of the present to the kingdom they once knew.

This scene makes the watch an important link between the three Ages of Beandom history: the original heroes, the immortal survivor who remembers them, and the new explorers carrying the quest beyond the old kingdoms.

Limitations and Open Questions

  • The full number of spirits programmed into the watch remains unknown.
  • The source of its power and the identity of its maker are not yet recorded.
  • Summoned spirits appear able to speak and observe, but the limits of physical interaction are unclear.
  • The device does not remove the boundary between life and death; it creates a temporary conversation across it.

Appearances

Most watches tell their owners what time it is. J.D.’s reminds him who is no longer in it.

A Bridge for the Living and the Dead

The watch summons spirits from the Netherworld, including heroes who remember the living Beandom. Those memories become a guide when J.D. enters the Sunken Lands and finds their old home buried and transformed.

Heebie and the Ghostly Trio

In the Refried era, Sir Jacques lives with Heebie, a jovial phantom whose former home occupied the site of Jacques’s estate. Hubert’s quest also reunites Jacques with three spirits from his past, allowing the original company to advise, interrupt, and emotionally complicate a modern family crisis. These manifestations precede the later Ghost Watch, showing that the dead remain active companions long before J.D. places their summons on his wrist.
