Snake in the Grass
The Adversary Plague
- Setting: tropical island region
- Primary threat: fiery serpents called Adversaries
- Effect: bites can produce demon blight and open mortals to possession
- Investigation: Xandir traces the plague toward a concealed island stronghold
A Plague That Opens the Door
The final prequel section begins with a demonic infestation rather than an ordinary disease. The Adversaries bite mortals and leave them vulnerable to demon blight, a condition that weakens the defenses against possession.
Observation Before Destruction
Xandir cannot solve the crisis simply by killing individual serpents; more keep appearing. He begins using reconnaissance, studying patterns, recruiting cherubic help, and tracing the source rather than relying only on overwhelming force.
The Prequel Reaches the Present
By the ninth age, Xandir has become a markedly different servant from the bored Watcher who opened the book. He remains sarcastic and dangerous, but centuries of loss and uneasy mercy have prepared him for the choices that define The Last Archangel.
