Overview
Grossina is the first giant Bellissimo meets during the second adventure. The meeting begins when Bellissimo, exhausted from running away from the lingering aroma of Taco Tuesday, collapses on what appears to be a cilantro-covered hill.
The hill rises. An enormous green hand reaches into the foliage. Bellissimo discovers that she has been sleeping in Grossina’s hair.
Despite the frightening introduction, Grossina is not interested in eating or crushing her visitor. She is lonely, curious, and delighted to find someone willing to stay and talk.
Appearance
Grossina’s size allows her sleeping body to blend into the landscape. Her hair supports enough greenery to resemble a hillside, including the cilantro that first traps Bellissimo in an unpleasant memory of the previous night’s celebration.
She has a craggy green face, enormous green hands, and a wide smile filled with crooked green teeth. Her intimidating scale contrasts with her shy expressions and desire for companionship.
The Sleeping Hill
Grossina had fallen asleep after the other giants moved on without her. She remains where they left her, hoping they will eventually return. Most of her days pass in long stretches of sleep, interrupted by the same familiar dreams.
Bellissimo’s arrival gives her something new: a story. Grossina listens as Bell recounts the Uppercase Prophecy, Roddy Squires, Sir Roderick, ELM, Jackdaw, and the accidental salvation of the kingdom. She laughs, gasps, and pays closer attention than many smaller listeners would manage.
A Giant Who Asks Before Acting
Grossina could easily force Bellissimo to remain, but instead asks her not to run and promises to explain herself. She places Bell safely on the ground, offers rest, and requests a story rather than demanding obedience.
This patience distinguishes her from the threatening image of giants assumed by Jackdaw. Grossina is capable of causing enormous damage, but her first instinct is conversation.
The Quest for the One Bean
In return for Bellissimo’s story, Grossina shares an old giant dream. She directs Bell toward the legendary One Bean, whose beanstalk is said to lead to the Treasure of Ages.
Grossina explains that giants once fought over the Bean until a wise leader placed a curse upon it: any giant who touched it would become a halfling. Because giants value their size so deeply, the curse ended the open struggle and helped push many of them into long sleep.
She cannot retrieve the Bean herself. Bellissimo can. To reach it, however, the smaller adventurer must overcome a chain of fearsome contradictions known as the Oxymorons of the Beandom.
Warnings About the Bean
Grossina does not disguise the danger. The One Bean has inspired wars, carries dark magic, and may corrupt whoever possesses it. She does not know exactly what it will do to one of the little folk, but she makes certain Bellissimo understands that treasure and temptation may arrive together.
That warning becomes essential when the Bean later offers Bellissimo power, status, and the one luxury she desires most: uninterrupted sleep.
Relationship with Bellissimo
Grossina and Bellissimo connect through exhaustion, humor, and a shared appreciation for naps. Bell does not flee when Grossina gives her the opportunity. Grossina responds by trusting Bell with a quest generations of giants could not complete.
Before returning to sleep, Grossina asks Bellissimo to come back and explain what the Treasure of Ages truly is. Their brief meeting demonstrates one of Book Two’s central lessons: the creature who appears to be the greatest threat may instead be the person who needs a friend.
