Overview

The second quest relies on several forms of magic that behave less like a single system and more like a collection of ancient rules waiting for the right person to misunderstand them.

Hidden prophecy text responds to condiments. A former measuring tool becomes a culinary relic. A beanstalk demands bodily ingredients in alphabetical order. A commercial bell shrinks anything taller than seven feet. Each element appears ridiculous until it becomes exactly what the heroes need.

Revelation by Condiment

The Hot-Sauce Prophecy

After the first adventure, Jackdaw uses the Uppercase Prophecy as a napkin during the victory celebration. Hot sauce, guacamole, and nacho cheese stain the scroll.

The accident reveals new writing hidden on the reverse side. Bellissimo contributes an expensive bottle of sweet-and-sour elven hot sauce, allowing Jackdaw to expose the entire second message.

When hordes attack, and flags are furled, a bell must sound to save the world. Moronic oxen must be slain, or all the world will end in pain.

Jackdaw interprets the “bell” as the new device ordered for his tower. Bellissimo suspects the name points toward her. Both readings eventually prove relevant.

Ex-caliper

Ex-caliper is a large silver spoon embedded in a stone pedestal inside a goblin pub near Circus Absurdus. Bellissimo discovers it while searching for a utensil capable of handling the establishment’s frozen “chilly.”

She removes the spoon easily. Light descends, unseen voices sing, and the surrounding goblins kneel. The barkeep explains that the artifact was once a caliper of great renown—a caliper of caliber—but is now an ex-caliper.

The Culinary Titles

The person who draws Ex-caliper is destined to create a dish so extraordinary that she becomes the greatest culinary figure among the goblins and their neighbors. The prophecy anticipates Bellissimo’s later transformation of the One Bean into an inexhaustible communal dip.

The Message in the Fire

Only Bellissimo can read the first instruction on the spoon: “Cast it into the fire.” ELM acts before anyone can reconsider and throws the artifact into a nearby firepit.

The spoon does not melt. Bright red letters appear along its handle in one of the goblin languages. ELM can interpret the newly revealed writing, allowing the quest to proceed. The episode establishes a recurring rule of Beandom artifacts: alarming instructions are sometimes literal, and ELM will usually test that theory before receiving permission.

The Beanbearer

Bellissimo becomes the Beanbearer after the Oxymoron quest. She carries the One Bean in a ring and feels an immediate emotional attachment to the small golden object.

The title is more than ceremonial. The growth enchantment recognizes the Beanbearer as the necessary contributor. Substituting another person’s blood, breath, sweat, or tears will not activate the beanstalk.

The BEST Spell

When ordinary water fails to enlarge the One Bean’s golden sprout, Jackdaw analyzes the enchantment and identifies a BEST spell. The name is an acronym describing four ingredients that must be supplied by the Beanbearer in a fixed order.

B — Blood

Bellissimo opens a small cut in her palm and lets drops fall onto the sprout. The plant immediately doubles in size.

E — Essence

Essence is supplied through breath. Bellissimo exhales over the leaves, and the stalk grows taller and thicker.

S — Sweat

Moisture from the Beanbearer’s brow carries the third ingredient. The plant rises beyond her height.

T — Tears

The final ingredient produces the greatest growth. Sir Roderick tells a tragic story until Bellissimo’s tears strike the stalk.

Once the four ingredients are supplied in order, the golden beanstalk becomes as wide as a house and rises beyond sight. The magic also reaches back through the ring and enlarges Bellissimo until her head enters the clouds.

The One Bean’s Mental Magic

The One Bean speaks directly inside Bellissimo’s mind. It identifies her desires, reflects her image across its surface, and offers to make her queen of the giants.

Its most dangerous power is persuasion. It presents selfishness as protection, isolation as freedom, and control as the only way to keep others safe. The voice comes from King Ogeron’s corrupted imprisonment within the Bean.

Bellissimo breaks the enchantment by rejecting the promised life and throwing the Bean into the lava of Mount Ominous. The act frees Ogeron and converts the artifact into One Bean Dip that all giants can share.

The Kleinmacher 2000

The Kleinmacher 2000 is a commercial giant-deterrent bell ordered by Jackdaw before the second prophecy is fully understood. Anything taller than seven feet that hears its ringing shrinks to approximately pixie size.

The bell fulfills both readings of the prophecy. It is literally the bell in Jackdaw’s tower, and it must sound to restore Bellissimo—whose nickname is Bell—from giant size.

ELM rings the device after teaching Jackdaw a Netherworld teleportation shortcut. Each peal reduces Bellissimo until she returns to her ordinary height.

Rules and Limitations

Hot sauce reveals the second prophecy but is not established as a universal method for every hidden text.
Ex-caliper responds specifically to Bellissimo as its chosen wielder.
The BEST ingredients must come from the Beanbearer and must be supplied in order.
The One Bean’s growth magic affects both the plant and its bearer.
The Kleinmacher bell affects creatures over seven feet, including allies.

Some wizards spend decades studying the deepest principles of magic. Others spill hot sauce on an ancient scroll and receive a sequel. I refuse to rank these methods.
