The Jaws of Hell

The Infernal Threshold

Quick Reference

  • Type: Infernal threshold
  • Appearance: Huge whirlpool of glowing magma between jagged rock towers
  • Position: Directly beneath Serche
  • Function: Boundary at the edge of Hell
  • Comparison: described as the opposite of the Pearly Gates

A Mouth at the Bottom of the World

The Jaws appear as an enormous molten vortex flanked by two towering formations lined with stone “teeth.” At the center is a darkness that absorbs the surrounding glow, giving the entire structure the appearance of an immense mouth waiting beneath Serche.

Threshold, Not City

The Jaws are not another name for Serche or for the Realm of Nod. They are the threshold beneath the suspended city—the point Serche cannot cross while its final righteous inhabitant remains inside.

Deep Canon · “Hell Freezes Over”

Xandir exploits the High Seraph’s sarcastic promise that he could enter Serche if Hell froze over. He shatters a supernatural blue orb above the Jaws, freezing the whirlpool, nearby magma, ship, and surrounding cavern in seconds—creating the literal condition needed to press his claim.
