The Lost Apprenticeship
Caspar trains obsessively for the chance to become Siegfried’s apprentice. His older brother Hans approaches the trials with far less discipline, yet wins the position after Caspar’s final throw mysteriously veers away from its target.
A Door Opened by Resentment
Humiliated and furious, Caspar runs into the forest, where a dark stranger finds him at exactly the moment he is most vulnerable. The promise that Caspar can become greater than everyone who dismissed him is enough to draw him into service. His transformation costs him his body and ultimately his life.
The Remnant
Caspar does not vanish completely. A remnant of his spirit later reaches Hans in a dream. Freed from the ambitions that destroyed him, Caspar reveals that Thantos is really Jorgen Müller and directs Hans to Klara’s portrait—the knowledge that gives Siegfried a way to break through Jorgen’s rage.
