  • Interview/Blog Tour: Rachelle Christensen with "Caller ID"

    March 13th, 2012

    Purchase “Caller ID”: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1599559900/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=racswrispo-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1599559900

I will give my usual weekly report on Thursday, because today I have a special guest on my blog. She is an award-winning author and savvy marketer. I read her first novel “Wrong Number” and thought it was a wonderful piece of writing and I’ve put her latest read on my to-read list. Please welcome my friend Rachelle Christensen.

What lessons did you learn from writing your first novel that you applied to this one?
I learned so much about editing and how to fine-tune a sentence. I learned to look at a scene from several different angles to see if my writing could evoke suspense from different levels—emotionally, physiologically, etc.
What are some red flags that you look for when you are revising something you’ve written?
Pet words. I always have a long list of words that I use too often. I go through my book and use the search function in Word to weed them out. It helps because I often find other things that I need to fix as well. The only downside is I keep getting new pets with each new novel. J

What sorts of things have you found work best to get the word out about your books?
That’s a loaded question, but I think the best idea is to utilize several different forms of spreading the word.
Who are the biggest cheerleaders of your writing? What do they do to encourage you?
My family, especially my husband. They ask about my writing, read early drafts of my books, help make time for me to write, and encourage me in my goals. I’m so thankful to have a supportive family—my husband is my biggest fan.
What’s something you would tell to aspiring writers that you wished you’d known from the beginning?
That you never stop learning, so don’t ever think that you can sit back and say, “I know all there is about writing.” Get yourself to a writers conference and soak up the knowledge!
What are you working on right now? What are your writing goals?
I just finished writing/editing book one of a new “Wedding Planner Mystery” series. I had so much fun writing this novel and getting to know the characters. The title is Diamond Rings are Deadly Things and it’s set in Sun Valley, Idaho near where I grew up.
My goals for writing is to just keep plugging away every day, whether it’s outlining the next book or editing/revising.
What sorts of things do you do as an author to improve your writing?
I attend writing conferences, classes, read books on writing techniques, work with critique groups, beta readers—basically I try to take advantage of every opportunity to increase my knowledge and expertise as a writer. It’s amazing how much there is to learn and I’m lucky that I love learning!
Where are the best places on the internet to learn about you?
My website, www.rachellechristensen.comand my blog www.rachellewrites.blogspot.com
    Author Rachelle’s FB Page
    Book Trailer
    Book Poster
Is there anything else you’d like to say?
Thanks so much for these great questions, Michael, and for letting me visit your corner of the net.

You’re welcome, Rachelle! She also wanted me to let you know about a contest she is running now, where you can win a camcorder or signed copies of her books. Get all the details here: http://rachellewrites.blogspot.com/p/ultra-flip-video-contest.html

  • The Cast List

    March 10th, 2012
Whenever a book comes out, I always play the game of deciding whom I would cast in each role if the book ever became a movie. I thought it would be fun to try this with “The Last Archangel”, one character at a time. I’ll post a new one every week with the main characters and you can see if you agree or disagree with my picks.

For this first pick, I’m going to start with the most prominent character, Xandir. He is a powerful angel who broke heavenly law and was sentences to serve as a destroying angel until the End of Time. He is a powerful and quick-witted character, often seen brandishing swords and engaging in high-speed chances.

My first pick, for the role of Xandir would be: Gerard Butler.

File:Gerard Butler (Berlin Film Festival 2011).jpgPhoto by Siebbi

Not only can this guy pull of intense roles, but he’s got the muscles to be convincing as an angel who’s job it is to destroy things. Just think of him as a Spartan…with wings. He doesn’t have to sing for this role (think Phantom of the Opera) and overall, I think he’d knock it out of the park.

What do you think? If not, who do you think would do better?

    Have a great weekend!

  • February is a Win!

    March 6th, 2012

Put February in the Win column!  I passed 50,000 words again, and I’m up for another great writing month in March. I had a crazy week revising my two parables for my “Parables for Today” submission. I guess that book is coming out this Summer. I’ll post the details as I have them.

    Stats:
    Running Total: 106,332
    Month to Date: 12,343
    Yearly Percentage to Go: 82.3%
    Writing Tip of the Week:
A good editor is worth his or her weight in…first edition rare books. (You thought I was going to say ‘gold’ didn’t you. I really do try to watch the cliché thing.) When looking for an editor, find someone who will really tell it to you straight and give you ‘tough love’ when you need it. I have a really tough editor help me disassemble and reassemble two of my stories this week and though it hurt a little, I ended up with a superior finished product.
    Writing Update:
“Canticle of Night” is finished! The entire thing can be read and listened to. My editor thought the story came to a satisfying conclusion, but if you do want more, I’m starting up the next “season” called “Canticle of Dawn”. It picks up years later in the Canticle Kingdom and tells the backstory of some of the pivotal characters from “The Canticle Kingdom” and continues the story from “Canticle of Night”. They have told me that they would like to turn it into an eBook and an audio book soon.

  • Angel Thursday: Interview with Eden

    March 1st, 2012

Happy March everyone! Two weeks until my birthday, and Spring is on the way. What could be better?
I’m happy to announce that I once again reached my word count goal last month. Though February had only 29 days, I still managed to write over 50,000 words, to bring me to over 100,000. I’ve got not intention of stopping now!
Here’s a flashback interview today with one of the characters from “The Last Archangel”. I’m currently writing the third installment and she figures pretty importantly there too.  Enjoy!

Interviewer:  Today we have Mrs. Eden Fortuna with us, with a segment you won’t want to miss.  She recently experienced a rather…traumatic episode in her marriage.  I’ll let her explain.
Eden: Traumatic is one word for it. I recently found out that my husband Daren is possessed by a demon.
Interviewer: That’s awful.  I’m sure many of our readers have suspected the same thing in moments of frustration.  Tell us, what were the warning signs?
Eden:  Well there are the more obvious signs.  My mild-mannered husband suddenly took a violent turn. I prepared this really nice dinner and got all dressed up and instead of a romantic evening, I ended up with bruises and a nearly shattered windshield.
Interviewer: I’m sorry to hear that, but there are many reasons a man could turn violent.  What were some of the other signs that tipped you off?
Eden: Now here’s a weird one: demons have an affinity for spicy food.  My husband hates spicy food, but then I found out that he started going to lunch several times a week at this Indian curry house—Taste of Bombay.  For a guy that can’t stand a green pepper in a sauce, that was a serious change of character.
Interviewer: What did you attribute all this to before you found the truth?
Eden: I thought he might be having an affair.  He was spending much longer hours at the office, and seemed less interested in spending time with me.  He even started telling me that he couldn’t even discuss what he was doing at work.  Eventually, he even claimed that there was another woman, but something still didn’t add up.
Interviewer: What finally tipped you off that something extra strange was going on?
Eden: The night after he stormed out, I found his cell phone that he had left behind and his day planner.  On the day he stormed out, he had written, THE END, and when his cell phone rang and it started smoking.  Before I dropped it, I saw the number…with a 666 area code.  Then when I picked it up again, I thought it would be a lump of ashes, but it didn’t even feel hot after it stopped ringing.
Interview: Creepy!  Did the caller leave a message?
Eden: Yes, but I couldn’t make out a word of it and neither could my friend, who is a professor of Linguistics.  That really awakened my inner conspiracy theorist.
Interviewer:  There you have it, everyone.  The surefire ways to tell if your loved one is possessed by a demon: violence, strange phone calls, disinterest in normal activities, long hours away, and…spicy food.  I guess the only question is what will you do now? I’m guessing traditional marriage counseling is out.  Perhaps if your therapist were also an exorcist.
Eden: I’m not exactly sure.  All of this pretty new to me. But one thing is certain: I haven’t been alone through all of this.  I mean, how many people get to meet their guardian angels? I don’t know how this is going to play out, but I know that the man I love is still there somewhere.  I’ll do anything to get him back.
Interviewer:  Thanks for answering my questions today, Eden.  We wish you the best of luck in getting this sorted out.
  • Gesundheit! At Last!

    February 28th, 2012

It’s amazing how little you get done when  sickness strikes. I was sicker this week than I have been since I was a little kid and spent entire days sprawled out on the couch watching cartoons and sipping Gatorade.(By the way, “Gesundheit” means “health” in German. That’s why you say it when to people when they sneeze).
I’ve decided that I need to be a little flexible on my blog schedule for my busy life. I’ll still shoot for Monday and Thursday, but it might be occassionaly bumped to a surrounding day.
I’m feeling very good about my writing with lots of a good news coming in.  We’re almost done with the shortest month of the year and I’m only about 2,000 words shy of hitting 50,000 again. I figure if I can hit the mark in February, every other month should be a breeze. Thank goodness for that Leap Day though this year where I get an extra day to get ahead on writing versus a normal year.

    Stats:
    Running Total: 103,749
    Monthly Percentage to Go: 4.4%
    Yearly Percentage to Go: 82.7%
    Writing Tip of the Week:
When working towards writing goals, always write a little extra on those days when things are flowing well. It’s like saving up a few extra dollars “for a rainy day.” Even though I was sick and got very little writing done for a few days this week, I still did not fall behind on my overall goal because I had been following this practice. There’s nothing more discouraging than seeing yourself fall farther and farther behind. Never let yourself get into that position.
    Writing Update:
Excellent progress on my novels with more than 30,000 words on Wandaful already. I worked on developing the series’ system of magic this week and I think it works really well. It has to do with different colors of magic that stand for different things, and I think you’ll all like it when I debut it.  Other projects are plugging along, and I found out that two of my modern parables are going to be included in the a published anthology coming out this fall.
“Canticle of Night” is almost complete and has been really fun.  Please take a moment to support it by clicking the ‘like’ button on the page. They have picked it up for a second season, so the story will continue! I’ll keep you posted on more details.

  • Avoiding Cliche Like the Plague

    February 16th, 2012
I’m back! I apologize for the short hiatus. From choir tours, to auditions, to funerals and more, my life has been on overdrive lately.
There have been many personal triumphs lately. For starters, if you are living in Utah, be sure to come see me perform in “The Secret Garden” at the Hale Center Theater Orem beginning in April.  You can get details at http://www.haletheater.org.
I’ll let you know of the others in my writing update. As far as writing goes, I’ve really hit my stride. Just take a look at the numbers:

    Stats:
My word count for the week: 11,672
    Running Total: 75,586
    Writing Tip of the Week:
I’ll start sharing some tips from my presentation at UVU called “Avoiding Cliché Like the Plague”. (See picture at the beginning of the post) Here’s my first installment:
There are three kinds of cliché I try to strike out of my writing:
Cliché Phrases: “He’s as skinny as a pole.”
Cliché Plot Points: “The knight saves the damsel.”
Cliché Characters: “The elf has pointy ears, and an affinity for baking.”
All of them can helped by taking what you have and twisting it, adding a vivid detail or two.  Instead you could have:
“He’s as skinny as a melting icicle.”
“The knight’s horse saves the knight.”
“The elf is a sculptor whose greatest dream is to fly.”
    Much more interesting, huh?
    Writing Update:
One of my short stories “Checkin’ It Twice” was accepted into an anthology this week. It will be out in time for the holiday season.  I’ll post more when I have it.
Speaking of Christmas anthologies, I still have a few slots in my own Christmas anthology of stories based on Christmas carols. Please check it out under “current projects”.
I’m getting ready to submit a short story to David Farland’s “Nightingale” contest. It can only be 2,500 words, but I think it’s great. Here’s hoping.
I also had two short stories become finalists in the Parables for Today contest (parablesfortoday.com). I’m waiting to hear if I’ll get one of the cash prizes (1st-5th place), but I’ll be happy in any case, because they will be in that anthology as well.
Things also plug along well with the novels, with about 20,000 words in each.
“Canticle of Night” has reached over the halfway point and has been really fun.  Please take a moment to support it by clicking the ‘like’ button on the page.

I’d love to know what you think about it!
  • Canticle Kingdom II and Other Great Things

    February 7th, 2012

I’m very pleased to announce that I will be bringing The Frozen Globe to life this year, which will be the second book in The Canticle Chronicles.  Here’s a sneak peek at the cover:

My schedule for Life, the Universe and Everything (LTUE) at Utah Valley University is as follows: (All events are on Thursday February 9th)
11:00 AM: Middle-Grade Books for Boys
    2:00 PM: Book Signing
4:00: Avoiding Cliché Like the Plague
I’m only able to attend one day, because I’m headed down to Arizona this weekend to perform in a couple of concerts. See the full schedule here: http://www.ltue.org/LTUE_2012.html

    Stats:
My word count for the week: 10,005
    Running Total: 65839
    Monthly Percentage: 15.9%
    Yearly Percentage: 12.8%
    Writing Tip of the Week:
No matter what you do, don’t think that you can revise everything yourself.  The human mind is a strange thing, and sometimes it glosses over mistakes. Having another set of eyes on your writing will help you catch those crazy mistakes.

For example, my wife was reading through one of my manuscripts and came across a hilarious typo. Instead of saying, “He took off his hat and set it aside,” it read “He took off his head and set it aside.”
This wasn’t supposed to be one of my science fiction or fantasy stories.
    Writing Update:
I’ve crossed the 20,000 word mark on “Wandaful”, and it’s going wonderful. I’ve been working on getting “Prometheus Returns” where it needs to be to send out and continue to send out queries for “Starspire”.  I got a nice rejection letter from an agent this week who said that the manuscript had strong writing and a great concept, but that she wasn’t taking on anything else right now. She thought that it would find a home elsewhere.
“Canticle of Night” has reached over the halfway point and has been really fun.  Please take a moment to support it by clicking the ‘like’ button on the page.

  • First Lap Down!

    January 31st, 2012

My first month of marathon writing is over, and I’ve set a good pace. I exceeded 50,000 words to come out a little ahead. The only think is that there are eleven months to go.  I feel good about things and about how things are turning out.  I should have many completed projects by the end of the year!
Still one more day to enter the Young Adult Blog hop to win a copy of “The Canticle Kingdom”. My publisher let me know that they are working on getting it out in eBook form, and I’m very excited for that.
    Stats:
My word count for the week: 13828
    Running Total: 55834
    Monthly Percentage: 111.7%
    Yearly Percentage: 9.3%
    Writing Tip of the Week:
Look out for your own pet phrases. It may be hard to spot them by yourself, so you may need to enlist the help of a friend.  You may have a favorite cliché, or even a brilliant original phrase that you just use too much.  Maybe all of your characters say the same phrase when they’re surprised.
Search and destroy.  Or at least, mix them up a bit.
    Writing Update:
I’m hard at work revising “Prometheus Returns” and hoping to get that out soon. I’m also working on a musical project called “Quest”, which is a parody of typical fantasy stories.  I hope someday to some of my works on stage.
I’m also hard at work on “Wandaful” and am well into the middle of it.  I find that the initial idea of the magic system based on color and time is evolving quite nicely and I’m loving playing the quirky characters off of each other.
“Canticle of Night” has reached over the halfway point and has been really fun.  Please take a moment to support it by clicking the ‘like’ button on the page.
