Gary Baumgartner and the Crimson Leaf Bloodline

Gary Baumgartner, an actor with a glowing Crimson Leaf mark on his hand

CHARACTERS OF LAUNCH TIME

Gary Baumgartner

Aspiring actor · blood heir · unwilling magical vessel

The Role of a Lifetime

Gary is a thirty-five-year-old New York actor whose career has produced more auditions than triumphs. Earnest, insecure, ambitious, and frequently short on money, he accepts Mr. Mercury’s extraordinary offer to join a secret expedition because it finally sounds like the break he has spent years waiting for.

Marked by the Crimson Leaf

A natural red leaf-shaped mark on Gary’s hand identifies him as a descendant of Felgarath. The bloodline allows him to open a portal sealed against ordinary magic. It also exposes him to psychic influence, supernatural fire, and the expectation that ancestry should determine allegiance.

Resisting the Part Written for Him

Felgarath attempts to use Gary as a vessel and treats his descendant as an extension of an ancient plan. Gary’s most important performance is therefore not theatrical. It is his refusal to become the person someone else has cast him to play.

Gary, Vincenza, and the Time Loop

Vincenza helps Gary remain grounded during the expedition and its aftermath. Their later family connects Gary’s choices to Sergio’s origin, turning the quest into a loop in which the future survivor and the past actor are bound by more than shared magic.

Chronicler’s note: Gary spends years pretending to be heroes. The real test begins when ancient power gives him every excuse to stop pretending and become a villain.
