The Giant Who Changes the Question
Xandir reaches Brekt expecting to confirm frightening reports about Giant violence. Instead, Brekt insists that his people cherish peace and civilization and have isolated themselves partly to escape both hostile humans and the violent Giants of Nod.
A Warning About Master Mahan
Brekt gives Xandir some of his clearest early intelligence about Master Mahan: the Giants of Nod follow him, his methods include enchanted influence, and his followers are preparing for conquest. Brekt also warns Xandir not to confront the Land of Nod alone.

Brekt’s testimony becomes morally decisive for Xandir. Once Xandir has met a peaceful Giant community, he can no longer accept the idea that every Giant deserves the same judgment merely because of ancestry. The distinction between Brekt’s people and Master Mahan’s marked followers drives Xandir’s growing resistance to indiscriminate destruction.
