Spoiler level: Through The Skyward Isle

Quick Reference

  • Tradition: Dolorii priesthood
  • Known user: Father Roleni
  • Form: An impossibly low sustained note
  • Effect: Physical force and overwhelming terror
  • Symbolic meaning: Judgment, doom, and presumed spiritual condemnation

What Is the Doom Tone?

The Doom Tone is a profoundly low note associated with the Dolorii priesthood and the Council of Tones. Father Roleni can utter it directly, producing enough force to throw an attacker backward while convincing the surrounding priests that the target’s soul has been condemned.

Sound, Fear, and Belief

The Tone operates on more than one level. It has an observable physical effect, but its greatest power over the Dolorii comes from what they believe it means. A people famous for fearlessness can be driven into panic by hearing the great Doom Tone associated with Telegro’s bells.

The Tone and the Bells

The Doom Tone is woven into a broader culture of bells. The Dolorii organize priestly rank around the Council of Tones, decorate clothing with bell symbols, and build their rituals around the seven great bells beneath Telegro’s Sanctuary. The note therefore acts as magic, theology, and social control at the same time.

Key Distinctions

  • The note has real physical force
  • Its spiritual meaning is interpreted by the Dolorii
  • The great Sanctuary bell magnifies its cultural terror
  • Fearlessness does not make the Dolorii immune to every fear
