Burgenring is the larger world glimpsed behind the mystery of the Frozen Globe and explored directly in The Skyward Isle. What first appears to be an isolated mountain civilization turns out to be only one piece of a much broader realm containing distinct peoples, competing traditions, ancient pilgrimage routes, and a ruler whose Sanctuary never stays in one place.

A World of Distributed Gifts

Burgenring’s cultures are shaped by supernatural gifts associated with the Exalted One. The Sansomnians do not require sleep. The Dolorii do not experience fear in the ordinary way. The Ayr possess a relationship with gravity. These gifts influence architecture, religion, politics, and even how each people imagines virtue.

The Hole Left by Ayr Mountain

When the Mountain of Ayr disappears from its proper place, it leaves more than empty geography. A breach opens in Burgenring’s defenses, allowing dark water and hostile creatures to pour into the land. The crisis turns the missing mountain into the central physical problem of Book Three.

Burgenring therefore transforms the Canticle series from a story about two connected worlds into a much larger cosmology of neighboring realms, transit spaces, and fragile boundaries.
