  • The Last Archangel Cover and Exciting News!

    April 10th, 2011

Due to some technical difficulties, the trailer for “The Last Archangel” is still under works.   I will share with you an early draft of the cover. Enjoy!

Also, Amazon.com has put the excerpt up for my contest entry into the “Amazon Breakout Novel Contest”.  Please go on over and have a look, and leave comments if you feel so inclined.  The Grand Prize is publication by Penguin with a $15,000 advance.  You can imagine how that would help my writing career!

Here’s what one reviewer said about it:

Great riveting storytelling full of huge surprises and big imaginative leaps. Equally satifying is the narrative voice that is as naturalistic as the story is fanastic – great contrast.

  • Portrait of a Mother Contest Results

    April 5th, 2011

As promised, her is a ‘portrait’ of my own mother.

My mother deserves all the praise I can dish out.  Not many mothers can raise eight children and have them all turn out to be happy, productive people. She stayed home to take care of us kids, and truly devoted herself to us.  She set a good example of hard work and compassion for us.  She encouraged us to pursue our talents, and I owe much of my love of music to her early and consistent piano lessons and her playing musical soundtracks for us and explaining the stories.
She possessed a great deal of patience, even in the face of chaos.  There was plenty of that.  She also took the time to play with us, to talk to us about our lives and to show us how to do things about housework and taking care of children that have proved invaluable to me now that I am a parent myself.
It seemed that wherever we moved with the military growing up, my mother would quickly find friends.  People trust her and feel like they can come to her for a listening ear, and she’s just fun to be around.  If her fun-loving personality doesn’t win you over, her homemade whole wheat bread will.
There is so much more I could say about my mother, but let me just say that I love and appreciate her for helping to mold me into the person I am today by setting such a good example for me.
Check out my blog later this week for my book trailer for “The Last Archangel”.  One reviewer, Author J. Lloyd Morgan said: “When you get this book, you’ll want to clear your schedule for the next couple of days. At the very least, leave a note for your loved ones explaining that you’re fine, just lost in an excellent story.”
Also check out this contest, in which you can win some great books, including a copy of “The Canticle Kingdom.”

  • Portrait of a Mother Contest

    March 1st, 2011
http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=thecant-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=1599558106&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifrOnly seven days until “Portrait of a Mother” becomes available.  It was the winning entry in last year’s Mother’s Day Contest at Cedar Fort, so it seems only fair that I should continue the contest tradition.  From now until the end of March, post a “portrait” of words describing why your mother is the greatest as a comment two this post.  On March 31st, I will draw two names from those who posted and they will each receive a signed copy of Portrait of a Mother.

You must be a follower of my blog to win and you can gain an extra entry for posting this contest on Facebook and one more for tweeting it.  (Just write down what you did as part of your comment post)  On the day of the drawing, I will post my own portrait of my mother, who did such a great job raising all eight of her children.

    May the complimenting commence!

  • Portrait of a Mother

    February 22nd, 2011

Today I posted on Mancave Authors about breaking gender stererotypes in fiction.

In a perfect example of breaking stereotypes, my newest release, “Portrait of a Mother” which comes out March 8th, 2011, is a tender Mother’s Day story.  It’s very short, but I think it’s a tale both you and your mother can enjoy.  You can preorder it here: http://amzn.com/1599558106.

Here’s the blurb from Amazon: “The time has come for little Nina to choose her mother, but she’s not sure how to decide! This tender and heartwarming tale of the true essence of motherhood is the perfect gift for all the women in your life.”

I also want to thank all those who made the Life, the Universe, and Everything 2011 Conference possible.  I sat on four panels, did a reading from “The Last Archangel” and had a fun book signing.  I’ll be blogging more about some things I learned there later.

  • Tips From the Front Lines

    February 12th, 2011
Right now I’m working through revising a novel I wrote in high school.  It was my first such attempt and I’m very fond of it.  I still think it has a good premise, but looking at it now with nearly a decade of additional writing experience, some of the writing seems laughable.

I’d like to share a tip every week that I’m gleaning from this process in hopes that others, especially you young writers, will not develop bad habits that will have to be broken later.
Tip #1: Vary the beginnings of your sentences.  If you’re not careful, your writing can start to sound like a “Tennis match”.
Hans smiled. “I thought you would say that.”
Anna scratched her head. “Of course, you can read me like a book.”
Hans took a step back. “….”
    Anna twitched her nose. “…”
Person one’s turn, person’s two’s turn…it starts sounding stilted.  Switch things around, put the dialog first sometimes, don’t use dialog tag sometimes, whatever you need to add flavor to your writing.
Have you seen this in your own writing?  In the writing of others?
  • "Show Your Love" Contest

    February 10th, 2011
In order to spread the word about the LDStorymaker’s Conference, the Storymakers are holding a great contest that rewards you for helping to get the word out.  You can read the post here:

  • LDStorymakers Conference

    February 10th, 2011
Last year, I attended the LDStorymaker’s Conference and I was glad I did.  I’ve been to many writer’s conferences and you definitely get the best bang for your buck here that I’ve ever seen.  Open to all writer’s, it is an incredible experience to hear from successful authors, agents, and others in the writing industry.  Mingle with published authors, pitch to agents and enjoy great entertainment.

Visit the conference site for more information, including how to register.

  • Aspiring Authors

    January 27th, 2011

Have you always wanted to write a novel?  Have you been working on one, or even have one completed, but don’t know what to do with?
When I became a published author and started doing book signings and school events, I was surprised how many people told me that they like to write and are in some stage of writing a novel. There were many people who helped me along my road to becoming a published author and I would like to repay the favor. It can be a confusing road, and it helps to have someone help you who has been there before.

For these reasons, I’ve just decided to create a program to assist aspiring authors.  I will select submissions on an ongoing basis from authors who have a project they are working on.  The submission will mirror what editors and agents expects to get from an author.  From the submissions that I get, I will select one every two months and work with that author.  I will help you edit the query letter and your first three chapters, and help you find a few editors or agents to which they can submit.
Additionally, I will answer any questions they may have about the process and give my honest feedback of their work.  I will do all of this free of charge.
In order to submit, please send the first 20 pages of your manuscript and a query letter to thecanticlekingdom@gmail.com.  The first submission period ends Feb 28th. Good luck!
    Manuscripts:
Should be 12pt Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins, with pages numbered and a header with “Author’s Last Name”/”Project Keyword” at the top of each page.
    Query Letters:
Should only be about 250 words and should include word count of total project, genre, brief “movie trailer” description of the story, and a short paragraph about your publishing experience.
  • Announcing "The Last Archangel"

    January 18th, 2011

I found out this week that another project tentatively titled “The Last Archangel” is going to be published through Cedar Fort!  It should likely come out later this year, but it’s not too early to start getting excited about it.  Here’s a brief overview of what it is going to be about:

The Last ArchangelDoomed to serve as a destroying angel until the end of the world, the fallen angel Xandir sometimes wonders what is taking so long.  In thousands of years, he has only cared about one person and he was forced to destroy her along with her entire city in the line of duty.

Then a secret brotherhood approaches him and claims that together they can end the world and reunite him with his lost love.  To do so, he must enter an ancient sunken city and emerge with a seed from the noxious tree at its center. With the seed’s poison they could construct weapons to bring down the curtain on Earth’s final act. Xandir’s journey takes him around the world, both above and beneath, sending him rushing in where most angels fear to tread.

I will keep you posted as I learn more about this exciting project!
