Overview
Nathaniel Nadle is a former neighbor and childhood victim of Sir Roderick. After a magical accident at the Wunderwell, he gains the ability to identify the truths people most fear about themselves and speak those truths with supernatural force.
Calling himself the Needler, Nathaniel uses emotional pain as both weapon and ideology. He does not merely insult his victims. He locates their hidden shame, self-doubt, regret, or fear and makes it feel undeniable. His attacks drain motivation, hope, and even the will to move.
Nathaniel of Pintoberg
Nathaniel grows up two houses away from Sir Roderick in rural Pintoberg. Roderick and his friends torment him and give him cruel nicknames such as “Nasty Nate.” The harassment becomes one of the deepest regrets of Roderick’s later life.
When Roderick sees the EBI wanted poster, he recognizes Nathaniel beneath the stringy brown hair, scarred skin, acne, and unusual green eyes. The assignment becomes more than a hunt. Roderick hopes to stop a dangerous criminal and make amends for helping create the pain behind him.
The Wunderwell Wish
Nathaniel receives his powers from the Wunderwell in Hornfang Forest. He wishes for a way to hurt those who hurt him in the deepest possible way.
The well grants that desire as both blessing and curse. Nathaniel can perceive and weaponize painful truths, but his identity becomes inseparable from injury, resentment, and the need to wound others. The ability gives him power without healing the suffering that produced the wish.
Truth as a Weapon
The Needler insists that he does not rely on lies. His strongest attacks are true statements stripped of compassion, proportion, context, and hope. Because the target recognizes the underlying truth, ordinary resistance fails.
Against Jackdaw, he reinforces the wizard’s fear that he is a conjuror of cheap tricks. Against ELM, he attacks the dark lord’s insecurity about his laugh and lack of success. Against Roderick, he exposes his boredom, fear of proposing, shame over his father, and belief that Bellissimo is too good for him.
The effect spreads beyond individual conversations. Guests at the palace collapse into despair, giants lie moaning across the mountains, and victims may remain barely able to eat, move, or defend themselves.
The Palace Attack
The Needler infiltrates a diplomatic gathering of werefolk and quietly visits table after table. By the time Sir Roderick confronts him, much of the audience has already fallen under his influence.
His strategy combines emotional paralysis with an approaching full moon. Once the trapped werefolk transform, hunger and instinct could turn them against the helpless palace population. Newstrodamus forecasts this outcome as a massacre unless someone changes the future.
Glass Magic
The Needler carries jagged mirror shards that can burrow into the ground and assemble into a towering glass golem. The creature reshapes its body into blades, launches storms of splinters, and guards the palace approaches.
The golem falls only through the combined effort of the Rod Squad: Michelle absorbs its attacks, Priscilla melts its glass, Grimblewaith and Glocke damage its structure, and Goat-Goat smashes through its core.
The Lunar Orb
A white orb supplied by Felgarath imitates full moonlight. With the command “Luna Maxima,” the Needler forces the werefolk into their animal forms before the natural moon rises.
The talisman creates a second crisis inside the palace and proves that Nathaniel’s work is connected to a larger campaign. Sir Roderick eventually takes the orb and smashes it, ending the artificial transformation.
Defeat and Exile
Sir Roderick’s own Wunderwell magic develops an unexpected consequence: every encouraging use covers more of his body in thick scales. The transformation horrifies him, but the resulting thick skin makes the Needler’s words less effective.
Roderick restrains Nathaniel, destroys the lunar orb, and banishes him across the northern border into the Arid Zone. He refuses to execute him after Bellissimo reminds him that killing an unarmed prisoner would make him the monster he fears he has become.
Alliance with Felgarath
After his exile, the Needler meets Felgarath on a mountainside. He reports that the Beandom is divided, complacent, and vulnerable to sudden attack. Felgarath rewards him with a new dark robe bearing crossed golden needles beneath a skull.
The scene reveals that Nathaniel’s palace attack also served as reconnaissance. Felgarath possesses the DEM and intends to expand his campaign through Cantus, Klingen, and eventually the Beandom.
Strengths and Weaknesses
- Strength: Instantly identifies emotional vulnerabilities.
- Strength: Uses truths that victims find difficult to dismiss.
- Strength: Can collapse groups without conventional combat.
- Weakness: Cannot easily affect targets whose hearts or skin have become magically hardened.
- Weakness: His confidence falters when words fail and he must rely on physical minions.
- Weakness: His need to inflict pain makes reconciliation nearly impossible.
The Needler proves that truth without mercy may be accurate and still be profoundly dishonest about the whole person.
