Overview

Grimblewaith begins as a Whatsit whose assigned place in the story is beneath someone more important. He is expected to serve as an evil sidekick, absorb danger, and remain replaceable. Rejection from that role wounds his pride, but it also frees him to discover that usefulness and loyalty do not have to belong to a villain.

Gruff, pragmatic, and reluctant to decorate his feelings with unnecessary words, Grimblewaith hides a dependable loyalty beneath a difficult exterior. He does not look like the Beandom’s traditional hero, and he has little interest in performing one. His path is built from work, earned trust, and the decision to keep helping after the role he originally wanted proves too small.

What Is a Whatsit?

Whatsits are a distinct people within the Beandom, often encountered in roles that larger or more celebrated figures treat as supporting positions. The name itself invites others to regard them as undefined, interchangeable, or difficult to classify. Grimblewaith’s story challenges each assumption.

He possesses a clear identity even before anyone grants him a heroic title. His later transformation into faekind changes what he can do and how others see him, but the loyalty, grit, and judgment that make the transformation meaningful already belong to the Whatsit who seeks it.

The Rejected Evil Sidekick

Grimblewaith initially hopes to find purpose as an evil sidekick. The role promises structure, recognition, and a place beside someone powerful. Instead, he encounters the disposability built into villainous hierarchies. A sidekick may be useful, but usefulness does not guarantee respect.

His rejection becomes the first major turn in his life. Rather than proving that Grimblewaith has no value, it exposes the poverty of the system evaluating him. The experience places him near the original questing company, where relationships are equally disorderly but eventually capable of becoming chosen rather than imposed.

From Minion Work to Public Service

By the events of The Whatsit’s Rebirth, Grimblewaith has climbed the ranks of the Beandom Highway Patrol. The career change is substantial: instead of serving a private villain’s ambitions, he works inside an institution intended to protect travelers and maintain order.

The uniform does not erase his rough manner or complicated history. It gives those qualities a new direction. Grimblewaith’s experience with criminal thinking, dangerous roads, and bad authority becomes useful when his superior assigns a mission that cannot be solved through ordinary patrol procedure.

The Mafaea Rescue Mission

Grimblewaith is ordered to rescue an old friend who has been forced to lead the notorious Mafaea family. The mission is personal before it becomes heroic. His goal is not abstract glory or recognition from H.O.B.B.I.T.; it is reaching someone whose danger he understands and whose life matters to him.

Infiltrating the Mafaea requires him to become faekind. That need sends him across the Beandom in search of a phoenix and an offering the creature will accept, while rival factions pursue the same transformative power. Every stage tests whether Grimblewaith can change without surrendering the identity that made him worth trusting.

The Phoenix Bargain

The phoenix capable of transforming Grimblewaith is not a convenient dispenser of heroic upgrades. It bargains, judges, and insists on terms. Grimblewaith therefore cannot simply demand a new form. He must seek the right offering and prove that the transformation serves something larger than wounded pride.

Rebirth becomes both literal and moral. Becoming faekind provides access needed for the rescue, but the deeper change is Grimblewaith’s acceptance that becoming “something more” does not require despising what he was.

Why He Matters

Grimblewaith demonstrates that the Beandom’s supporting characters can become central without changing into imitations of its famous knights. He does not need Sir Roderick’s title, Jackdaw’s scholarship, or ELM’s theatrical power. His heroism grows from loyalty that survives disappointment.

He also expands the meaning of transformation. Fantasy rebirth often promises that an outsider will become acceptable by becoming someone else. Grimblewaith’s journey insists that power and form may change while the essential self remains worthy of preservation.

Relationships

Wren / Serrinanal

An old friend with two names and a forgotten connection whose forced leadership of the Mafaea gives Grimblewaith’s mission its personal urgency.

Wormtoe

Another underestimated subordinate from the world of villainy. Their different choices reveal how people respond when a hierarchy treats them as disposable.

The Phoenix

A demanding source of transformation whose refusal to simplify the bargain forces Grimblewaith to examine his motives.

The Original Company

The questing company gives Grimblewaith a place where loyalty can become reciprocal, though friendship remains disguised beneath insults whenever possible.

Strengths

  • Practical judgment: He notices the immediate problem rather than waiting for prophecy to phrase it attractively.
  • Grit: Rejection changes his path without ending his effort.
  • Loyalty: Once earned, his commitment survives danger and inconvenience.
  • Adaptability: He moves from villainous employment to public service and from Whatsit to faekind without becoming unrecognizable.
  • Protective courage: His central mission begins with an old friend, not a promised reward.

Appearances

Grimblewaith spent years being told he was a supporting character. He eventually supported an entire rescue mission and declined to call the correction subtle.
