Overview
Glocke is the fierce pixie whose voice remains in Grimblewaith’s head long after their official partnership ends. She is tiny, aggressive, loyal, tactically inventive, and capable of making a threat sound like a routine greeting.
Her Book Five role unfolds in layers. She begins as an absent former partner, appears to have become the criminal Godmother of the Mafaea, publicly rejects Grimblewaith, and finally reveals that she has been guiding him while maintaining a dangerous position inside the family.
Officer Glocke
Glocke and Grimblewaith once serve together in law enforcement. Her signature method involves flying into one side of an enemy’s head and exiting through the other—a maneuver more effective against creatures with soft internal structures than against glass golems.
An attempt to break a glass-golem barricade leaves her body badly injured but does nothing to reduce her voice. She is reassigned to Pigspimpel Camp as a Wizarding Drill Sergeant, where her intensity becomes part of the training tradition.
The Mafaea Attack
The BPD announces that the Mafaea have struck Pigspimpel Camp, killing some inhabitants and taking magical cadets hostage. Glocke is among those caught in the crisis. Her connection to the Mafaea—and her ability to command fear despite her size—eventually places her at the head of the organization as Donna Glocke.
The Mafaea are not merely a criminal family. Their protected territory, faekind membership, inherited leadership, and capacity for war make them a political power. A careless rescue could free one prisoner while triggering a conflict the weakened Beandom cannot survive.
The Voice in Grimblewaith’s Head
Throughout the quest, Grimblewaith hears Glocke’s familiar voice giving advice, challenging his self-pity, and pushing him away from fatal mistakes. He assumes memory or imagination is producing the commentary.
Glocke later reveals that the voice is real. Her position as Donna gives her access to a magic mirror through which she can watch and speak to him. The unseen partnership continues even while both characters believe they are operating alone.
The Godmother’s Performance
When the newly faekind Grimblewaith enters Mafaea territory, Glocke receives him in black robes and demands to be called Godmother. She accuses him of abandoning her, claims the Mafaea as her people, and orders preparations for troll poetry when he refuses to leave.
The performance protects both of them. The BPD Chief is using Grimblewaith’s legal entry to breach the territory’s magical defenses. Glocke cannot openly side with him without losing control of the family or exposing herself to execution. After the battle breaks apart, she privately apologizes and explains the truth.
Why Glocke Stays
Grimblewaith asks her to escape and restore their old partnership. Glocke refuses because the old arrangement cannot simply be recovered. Another Mafaea leader would take the family to war immediately, while the Beandom is already weakened by the Dearth and the loss of the giant alliance.
She remains Donna to delay that war, organize faekind resistance, and investigate the larger enemy circling the realm. Grimblewaith becomes her observer at the borders. Their partnership changes from patrol work into a hidden alliance operating across political lines.
Key Relationships
- Grimblewaith: Former partner, trusted friend, and field agent beyond Mafaea territory.
- The BPD Chief: Commander whose secret agenda turns Grimblewaith’s rescue mission into an invasion.
- The Mafaea: The family Glocke must command convincingly enough to prevent a larger war.

Glocke is most dangerous when everyone believes she has chosen the wrong side—including, occasionally, her allies.
