Guardian Angels

Mortal Protectors and Guides

  • Known guardians: Jertel, later Judy
  • Function: watch over mortal charges and their families
  • Visibility: usually unseen unless circumstances permit otherwise
  • Intervention: can arrange opportunities without removing mortal agency

Protection Without Control

Guardian angels in the series do not simply take over when a mortal is endangered. Jertel watches over Judy throughout her life and helps restore the lost antidote to her path, but Judy must still decide how to use it. The guardian creates opportunity without replacing choice.

A Charge Can Include a Family

Later books broaden the idea of guardianship. Judy explains that her protection of Eden extends to Eden’s family as well, making the role relational rather than narrowly attached to one individual body at all times.

A Role Mortals Can Enter

Judy’s story shows that guardianship is not restricted to beings who began existence as angels. After death and further service, she is permitted to become Eden’s guardian angel, turning an earlier joke into a genuine celestial vocation.
