Heaven’s Chosen Head Watcher
When the Watchers are first sent to observe the young human race, Michael designates Azazel as their Head Watcher. The others are commanded to treat Azazel’s orders as though they came through the celestial chain of command itself. That authority gives his later choices consequences far beyond his own fall.
Authority Hardened into Control
Azazel uses formal heavenly mechanisms such as Mandates, communication marks, and Angelic Covenants to bind other Watchers to missions. During the Giant crisis he pushes the darkest interpretation of the evidence and helps commit the Watchers to a war many of them do not fully understand.
The Fallen Instigator
By the time of Xandir’s trial, Azazel himself has fallen. Xandir is explicitly judged for knowingly aiding the rogue angel and for joining fellow Watchers in revealing forbidden heavenly secrets to humanity. Azazel’s rebellion is therefore not background mythology; it is one of the direct causes of Xandir’s sentence.

Age of Archangels shows that Azazel’s influence predates the modern crisis by millennia. His decisions about the Giants, his use of celestial authority, and his eventual rebellion create a historical pattern the later books keep revisiting: a powerful being deciding that forbidden means are justified by what he believes should happen to humanity.
