The following is a demo video I created using Canva as part of a first-year German online course from Brigham Young University. This was created to provide an example to the rest of the language team of what a situation-based grammar video could look like in a variety of world language classes. At the beginning of the video, the viewer is asked to imagine themselves in a situation. In this case, ordering food at a restaurant. This acts as a pre-test. Near the end of the video, the students are asked to re-imagine themselves in the same situation after having received instruction about how to apply the grammar principle. This acts as a post-test.
The following are storyboards I created for a technology instructional video while working as a freelancer for TestOut Corporation. These videos are meant to train aspiring technology professionals about data privacy and security. In this project, I focused on providing clear objectives, giving the learner digestible chunks of comprehensible input.
The following are assessment questions meant to assess learners after they have watched instructional videos about technology. These were also created for TestOut Corporation. In these questions, I focused on creating questions that had plausible distractors and descriptive feedback, so that learners would have to demonstrate mastery of the concepts and could learn from the mistakes they make.
Online World Language Courses Developed for Brigham Young University
This is an online course for high schoolers and college students I helped design and build on Canvas for Brigham Young University. I worked with subject matter experts, coordinated media production, and oversaw the quality assurance process. The university’s American Sign Language Courses are some of its most popular online offerings.
Testimonials
“I just wanted to tell you that you are fantastic. Clarissa and I both agree that you have been the best person (by far) to work with on these elementary courses. Your professionalism, creativity, highly developed skills, communication, and general good nature have made our jobs so much easier. And it has made the German course fantastic. The stories and songs are turning out great.”
-William Anderson, Media Specialist Middlebury Interactive Languages
“Michael is extremely hardworking and dependable. He worked well with other team members as well as took the initiative to complete additional tasks independently. He was always happy, on task, and willing to lend an extra hand to others. In addition, Michael always had the most creative activities and ideas for his courses. Team members from other languages would always turn to him for added insight and creativity. Under Michael’s guidance, the German team produced two high-quality courses in a short amount of time. He truly was an overall great asset to our team and company.”
-Kandyce Coston, Manager at Middlebury Interactive Languages
As the German Language Team Lead, he has worked with various teachers over multiple years to take generic standards and skills and organize them into specific and measurable learning objectives, pacing guides, common formative assessments, and lesson materials that have improved instruction and collaboration. I believe Michael’s strengths as an effective leader, a curriculum expert, and an excellent instructor will continue to help him in any educational endeavor he seeks.
