CORRUPTED ESSENCE
Black Sustenance & Dark Mites
A lightless power from beyond the Realm’s barrier, capable not merely of feeding magic but of binding souls in place.
Major Book Three spoilers: this entry concerns the hidden mechanism behind Sarchat’s binding of the Ethermen.
The Opposite of the Eternal Well
Black Sustenance is described as the inverse of the life-giving prismatic power associated with the Eternal Well. Rather than carrying the bright spectrum of the Realm, it appears as a lightless residue that has seeped through the World Fissure from beyond the barrier.
Sarchat’s Discovery
Sarchat finds a vein of the substance in the deep places and learns that it can do something ordinary Sustenance cannot: bind a soul in place. He uses that property in the ceremony that traps Juliana and the Ethermen, turning a foreign corruption into a tool of domination.
Dark Mites
The black material is associated with tiny beings that Azil distinguishes from the ordinary orange Mage Mites of Pantonallia. These Dark Mites look black and oily when massed together and respond strongly to the Helm of Lost Worlds. Their exact origin and relationship to the foreign Sustenance remain only partly understood.
Power from Outside the System
The importance of Black Sustenance is cosmological as much as magical. It shows that not every power operating in the Realm belongs to Rahim’s ordinary cycle of Essence, Sustenance, and Potation. Some forces enter from beyond the Realm’s protected order—and can distort its laws in dangerous ways.
