The Ancient Binder
Sarchat survives in history as a monk associated with one of the most consequential acts in the Realm’s past: the binding together of Earthmen and Ethermen. Later traditions remember him with titles such as Bringer of Woes and Father of Calamities, names that reflect how completely his actions reshaped later generations.
Sarchat and Juliana
At the Orange Keep, Sarchat is found bound together with Juliana, Queen of the Ethermen. Their joined state is not symbolic: as long as they remain clasped, the two races remain bound. Breaking that bond becomes essential to understanding the origins of Hunger, Thirst, and the divided condition of humanity.
A Preserved Threat
Sarchat relinquished nearly all life in order to maintain the ancient binding, leaving only a spark behind. Reviving him is therefore both a solution and a risk. Timotheus remembers exactly how dangerous he can be and argues that awakening him may be worse than leaving the old wound untouched.
The Cost of Undoing the Past
Sarchat embodies a recurring theme of the cycle: an ancient catastrophe cannot simply be reversed without consequence. The people attempting to heal the world must work with the remains of those who broke it, and the knowledge needed for restoration is often inseparable from the danger that caused the damage in the first place.
