Sin Shrouds

Serche’s Visible Record of Wrongdoing

  • Red stains: sins of commission / wrongful actions
  • Black stains: sins of omission / wrongful inaction
  • Gate function: required for passage through Serche’s internal gates
  • Removal rule: cannot be taken off until completely spotless
  • Cleansing: connected to the Pool of Divine Tears and sacrificial transfer

Conscience Made Visible

A Sin Shroud turns moral record into visible fabric. New wrongdoing produces stains that cannot simply be brushed away, making private rationalization much harder in a city where everyone can see what the garment records.

A Prison Worn Around the Neck

Serche’s gates require the Shrouds, yet the front gate will not release someone who still wears a stained one. Attempts to pull the garment off only make it tighten. The same object that permits movement inside the city therefore helps keep its inhabitants trapped.

Deep Canon · Cleansing and Cost

The Pool of Divine Tears can cleanse a Shroud, but the climax shows that cleansing is not merely magical laundering. Jarom’s spotless Shroud absorbs Xandir’s stains after Jarom’s own sacrifice has cleared his record, turning the mechanism into an image of one person willingly bearing another’s burden.
