Daren Fortuna / Sparkslinger — Host and Possessor

Daren Fortuna / Sparkslinger

Host and Possessor

Identity Note

Daren and Sparkslinger are not the same person. Daren is a mortal man; Sparkslinger is the demon who possesses and uses his body. They share one reference page because much of the novel’s mystery depends on distinguishing the host from the being controlling him.

Daren Fortuna

Daren is Eden Fortuna’s husband, remembered by her as a loving, quirky man whose behavior changes with frightening speed. His sudden cruelty, secrecy, unusual stamina, and withdrawal from family relationships become some of the first signs that the ordinary explanation for their marriage crisis is incomplete.

Sparkslinger

Sparkslinger is the demon operating through Daren’s body. Possession is difficult when a host is strong-willed; Sparkslinger admits that taking control of Daren required months of pressure. He uses the body to advance a larger demonic plan while trying to preserve the host long enough to remain useful.

Why the Distinction Matters

Eden’s question is not simply whether she can forgive what her husband has done. She must determine which actions belong to Daren and which belong to the invading intelligence controlling him. The answer affects whether rescue, reconciliation, or separation is morally possible.

Deep Canon · Major Spoilers

Sparkslinger eventually turns against Dusteater after learning that the demon Ashbreather survived. Even then, leaving Daren is not simple: Daren’s body has become so weakened that an abrupt departure could kill him. By the end of the story, Daren survives with Sparkslinger still entangled in his condition, leaving recovery and reconciliation as an ongoing process rather than a clean supernatural reset.
