Xandir and Uriel
- Exile name: Xandir
- Original identity: Archangel Uriel
- Exile effect: older identity and memories are suppressed
- Mortal Archangels: may retain or recover fragments of celestial memory
A Name Can Be Part of a Sentence
Xandir eventually learns that even the name he has carried for millennia belongs to his exile. When the High Seraph releases him from service, long-fettered memories return and the name Uriel is restored.
Memory Is Not All-or-Nothing
Later, as a mortal child, Xandir remembers pieces of his earlier existence through dreams and sudden recognition. Josephus explains that other mortal Archangels were permitted to retain portions of angelic memory as well.
Identity Across Lives
The series treats identity as continuous even when memory, name, body, and assignment change. Xandir, Uriel, and the mortal child are not separate people; they are different stages of one continuing person.
