Shard Soldiers
Fragments That Refuse to Stay Dead
Quick Reference
- Creator / commander: The Many-Named One
- Material: Dark weaponized shards
- Forms: Soldiers, spiders, snakes, wolves, clouds, and larger composite bodies
- Primary advantage: Destruction can produce smaller surviving threats
- Secondary danger: Flying fragments remain lethal to nearby civilians and defenders
An Army Made of Edges
The shard soldiers appear during the climactic conflict of The Skyward Isle. Their bodies are assembled from dark fragments with points protruding in every direction. They do not need conventional weapons because their bodies are weapons.
Breaking One Is Not Enough
A shattered soldier may not stay defeated. Its pieces can gather themselves into smaller creatures, including spiders, snakes, and wolves. Combat therefore becomes a problem of containment: defenders must scatter or reduce the fragments enough that they cannot easily reorganize.
Every Victory Can Hurt Someone Else
Destroying a shard soldier sends dangerous pieces flying. Peter discovers this while trying to protect children in the schoolhouse, where fragments from a successful strike can injure the very civilians he is trying to save.
The Many-Named One’s Body and Army
The same principle scales upward. The Many-Named One can form himself from the shards, shatter, reform in an older identity such as Thantos, and finally draw the remaining pieces of his army back into himself to create a larger and deadlier body.
