The Royal Guard

Soldiers of the Crown

Spoiler level: Book One

Quick Reference

  • Realm: The Canticle Kingdom
  • Command: A Captain of the Guard
  • Duties: Palace security, patrol, investigation, arrests, and defense
  • Allegiance: The reigning crown
  • Important distinction: The Guard is not the same institution as the Five Knights

The Kingdom’s Standing Force

The Royal Guard provides the ordinary military structure of the kingdom. Guards patrol the castle, respond to magical threats, investigate suspicious activity, take prisoners, and act in the queen’s name.

Authority Follows the Throne

Unlike the Five Knights, whose covenant is tied to defending the kingdom itself, the Royal Guard is bound more directly to the government in power. That distinction becomes dangerous when counselors rule through a young queen and royal troops are used to crush opposition.

Protection and Enforcement

Individual members can be honorable defenders, yet the same institution can become an instrument of repression. The Guard therefore illustrates a recurring political question in the series: whether loyalty to lawful authority is enough when that authority has been corrupted.

Institutional Role

  • Protect the palace and crown
  • Enforce royal commands
  • Investigate threats and crimes
  • Provide conventional military force
  • Reflect the legitimacy—or corruption—of the government directing them
