The Pilgrim Masks are white artifacts patterned with black lines and preserved by the Sansomnians for the return of sacred travelers. Their very existence suggests that crossing between worlds was once common enough for language barriers to require a dedicated magical solution.

The masks do not simply amplify sound or replace one spoken language with another. As soon as a mask covers the wearer’s face, surrounding speech becomes understandable in the wearer’s own mind. The effect appears to work in both directions, allowing Pilgrims to converse naturally with people whose language they have never studied.

Knowledge That Can Remain

The Sansomnians admit that even they do not know precisely how the masks work. Their tradition holds, however, that wearing one for several days causes the effect to become permanent. That makes the masks unusual artifacts: rather than merely lending a temporary power, they can apparently teach the mind and leave the user changed after the object is removed.
