Who Is Camilla?

Camilla is Queen Ellis’s beloved calico cat and one of the few constant comforts in the queen’s chamber during her long illness. She is so closely associated with Ellis that the two are rarely seen apart.

Because of that closeness, changes in Camilla become unsettling evidence that the queen’s condition may not be an ordinary sickness. When her bright coat begins developing strange gray marks, Rufus realizes that whatever is happening may reach beyond a single patient.

A Small Warning of a Larger Threat

Camilla gives the story a quiet way to show escalation. A royal illness can be explained away as misfortune; the same unnatural deterioration appearing in a healthy animal is much harder to dismiss. Her presence turns a private medical mystery into evidence of a wider magical disturbance.
