Goblin Pox is a magically inherited illness tied to the descendants of Sir Roderick. Fever, weakness, pain, and mental torment worsen as the disease advances. The curse can be transferred to the next person in the family line through a formal spoken passage, restoring the current bearer while condemning another.

The Lurker’s Persuasion

Each afflicted bearer may hear the Lurker: a silky, relentless voice that knows private fears and presents selfish survival as heroic necessity. It rarely needs to lie outright. Instead, it arranges true dangers so that passing the curse appears to be the only responsible choice.

Breaking the Line

The curse ends if a bearer voluntarily dies without passing it onward. That apparent solution forces the Roderick descendants to choose between family, kingdom, duty, and survival. Sir Roderick XIII transfers the burden to Rayden before the Titan battle; years later, the pox reaches Hubert, who intends to become its final bearer.

More Than a Disease

The Lurker’s later escape and alliance with political ambition reveal that Goblin Pox is not merely a medical problem. It is part of a surviving supernatural conspiracy whose full history extends beyond the first Refried novel.
