The War in Heaven

The Conflict Before Xandir’s Exile

  • Era: before the Watchers’ Earthside service
  • Aftermath: 200 Watchers are set apart and assigned to Earth
  • Xandir’s connection: his original celestial career is shaped by the conflict
  • Long-term consequence: the Watcher experiment eventually leads to the Giant crisis

The Conflict Behind the Series

The War in Heaven is not retold as a complete campaign in the novels, but its consequences are everywhere. Xandir explains that the 200 Watchers were set apart after the conflict and sent to Earth after humanity’s creation.

The Watchers as an Aftermath

Xandir describes the group as celestial “fence sitters” who were placed where Heaven could keep an eye on them while they handled the ordinary affairs of the new world. Their later fascination with humanity turns that containment strategy into another crisis.

Why It Still Matters

The War in Heaven establishes the background for Xandir’s swords, the Watcher order, the later fall of Azazel and others, and the divided loyalties that define Xandir for millennia.
