Exactly What Rich Thinks He Wants
Mallory first appears during detention and immediately captivates Rich. She is confident, funny, socially comfortable, and interested in him in a way he finds almost impossible to resist. That attraction becomes important because it tempts Rich to neglect promises and ignore the uneasy signs gathering around him.
A Character Built Around Uncertainty
Early in the series, Mallory can plausibly be read as a crush, a lure, a victim, a rival, or something more dangerous. Rich’s difficulty reading her mirrors the larger problem of the first quest: he knows he has a Nemesis, but he does not yet know how closely that enemy may be woven into his everyday life.

Later books make the opposition explicit. Mallory is identified as Rich’s Nemesis and serves as the black queen in living-chess conflicts. Her battles with Nadia and Rich turn emotional rivalry into literal board mechanics, and Bishop: Betrayal directly frames a confrontation between Rich and Mallory as a Nemesis duel.
