Rich’s Opposing Knight

A Paired Opponent
Aaron explains that a Paladin’s awakening also activates an opposing quest. The Nemesis is not simply a random villain who happens to cross Rich’s path; the two roles are designed as counterparts whose growth leads toward confrontation.
The Unfair Advantage
The Paladin must practice difficult virtues, while destructive choices can be easier to find and complete. Historically, Nemeses finish their preparations quickly. That imbalance creates the deadly urgency behind Rich’s first week.
Hidden in Plain Sight
Much of the first book’s tension comes from Rich knowing the Nemesis exists without knowing whom to trust. School rivals, adults, strangers, and apparently friendly faces can all become suspects, forcing him to learn that appearances are a poor substitute for judgment.
Deep Canon · Identity Spoiler
Later books identify Mallory as Rich’s Nemesis and continue the pairing long after the initial four trials. Their opposition expands into living-chess battles where she can serve as a dark queen while Rich takes on increasingly kinglike responsibilities.
