Nadia first seems like exactly the kind of opponent Rich expects to fight: intimidating, aggressive, and ready to challenge him. The first book complicates that assumption by placing the two in circumstances where survival and compassion matter more than keeping score.

Her powers manifest through waterlike energy and a light-blade effect, and the series reveals that a queen’s strength is tied in part to her bond with her king. Her role therefore turns emotional trust into a literal source of power on the board.
