Who Is Jonathan Kausen?

Jonathan Kausen worked as an interpreter for Captain Edison’s unit during the war. Their friendship survives the end of the conflict, giving Edison a trusted contact in Germany when the name on the bottom of Kate’s music box becomes his only meaningful lead.

Jonathan occupies an important practical role in the historical strand. He can navigate language, local knowledge, and the realities of postwar Germany in ways Edison cannot. The extraordinary search for a vanished child therefore depends first on ordinary human connection.
