Who Is Howa?

Howa is a broad, exuberant drummer who finds Johann freezing in the mountains and welcomes him with the nickname “little bird.” He leads Johann into a hidden refuge populated by musicians whose magical art has survived only because its practitioners disappeared from the wider world.

Howa’s humor and theatricality disguise enormous skill. He can use drumming to ride an avalanche, crack open the earth, accelerate an entire traveling party, and coordinate musical forces powerful enough to alter the environment on a massive scale.

The Hidden Musicanters

Howa’s community preserves a tradition once hunted nearly to extinction under Goldenrule. They tell important stories through song, improvise together instinctively, and even vote by playing harmony or dissonance. Their culture treats music not as decoration but as language, law, history, identity, and magic.

When Johann reveals that the old extermination threat is gone and that darkness is again spreading across the worlds, Howa becomes one of the strongest voices for returning to action. The decision brings an endangered tradition back into history at exactly the moment its abilities are most needed.

Nature Answering Music

Howa eventually helps Johann perform a difficult musical working in which rhythm, instrumental parts, and a high descant combine to awaken a deeper relationship with the natural world. The episode shows that Musicanter magic can do more than move objects: properly structured music can temporarily change what a person is capable of commanding.
