The quest so far

Two centuries after the original Beandom quest, Jackdaw lives as Sir Jacques Dawkins, an immortal wizard and Wish Warden. Hubert Veldin, a young man dying of Goblin Pox, invokes his right to a final wish: he wants to meet the family he never knew.

The reunion brings Jacques into the lives of Hubert’s six siblings: potion maker Rayden, accountant Eustace, actor Phillip, scholar Zella, the outlaw Regina known as the Scarlet Lily, and Catherine, who cares for Hubert. Their different lives conceal a shared history of illness, separation, and choices made under pressure. Goblin Pox has been passed down the family. Hubert, the final bearer, intends to let it end with him rather than pass the suffering onward.

The voice called the Lurker links the family’s present trouble to Ruprecht and the old quest. Meanwhile, JABB’s ambitions and the search for the Lively Relics turn a private reunion into a struggle over the kingdom. Jacques’s involvement in the museum heist helps JABB obtain the Cloak of Visibility, a mistake that becomes painfully clear when they confront him.

How it ends

Sir Roderick XIII, the siblings’ supposedly dead father, returns. He explains that Lunamina helped him fake his death so he could search for a cure and keep the relics from JABB. He brings an amulet that slows Hubert’s illness. It buys time; it does not cure the pox.

Jacques and Roderick challenge JABB’s claim to the throne through the Kingdom Charter. After a sword contest and a contest of knowledge, the decision comes down to singing. The still-active Peevestone causes JABB to match music that sounds right to him but wrong to everyone else. Jacques wins. JABB escapes through a portal, and Jacques declines the crown in favor of Roderick.

The victory leaves the larger danger unresolved. Ruprecht’s cell is empty, with evidence of a portal escape. Rayden, Phillip, and the Scarlet Lily prepare to pursue him; Eustace and Zella remain to support their father. Catherine stays with Hubert.

Jacques has another emergency. Philomina has used forbidden time magic after researching the incident behind his immortality. He leaves Heebie to care for Hubert and Catherine, then follows her into his own distant past.

• Roderick: becomes king and begins rebuilding trust with his children.

Three journeys converge

Sir Jacques follows Philomina into the past while Rayden, Phillip, and Regina pursue the Lurker. ELM, now an immortal anti-pirate, and the Beanwitch return to help. The separate journeys expose threats to the family, the kingdom, and the history Jacques remembers.

Philomina’s encounter with Excalibur binds her to a crown she refuses. Jacques and Merlin seek a way through the resulting curse and time tremors. Their search leads to the Heartbean, but Mina eats an unripe bean and falls into stasis until the plant matures centuries later.

To prevent a succession war, Lady Maud agrees to wear Mina’s likeness and rule through her sovereign bond. Jacques leaves the real Mina preserved beneath the castle and returns to an altered present. He remembers both histories, while the world around him has grown from decisions made in Mina’s name.

Meanwhile, the Order of the Red Leaf gains control of Rayden and Phillip. Regina escapes into another world and undertakes Schreiber’s Wish Quest. Its trials earn her a wish coupon, which she brings home instead of spending immediately. The Order’s scheme requires all seven of Roderick’s children and a surrendered life to restore Felgarath.

How it ends

The mature Heartbean offers Jacques one restoration. It could address several different wrongs, but he cannot simply repair everything. Reversing the altered history would also erase lives and relationships that now belong to real people.

Mina awakens under Morgana’s influence and confronts Jacques beneath Hide Park. Her anger includes the choices made for her and the centuries she lost. Morgana seeks access to the Heartbean’s power, and Jacques’s attempt to save Mina becomes a struggle over who controls her life.

At the palace, Regina faces her enthralled siblings and possessed father. She spends her wish to cure Hubert and carry him, Catherine, and Catherine’s children to safety. The magic destroys Hubert’s pox and the Lurker’s pathways within him. Regina accepts the cost: timeless stasis inside a crystal shell. JABB carries her away.

Hubert wakes healthy in the hidden Whatsit colony beneath Mount Ominous. Lunamina explains the price Regina paid and gives him the Elder Umbrella. With Nibbin as his guide, he leaves to help his captive family. Catherine and her children remain sheltered. Jacques still faces Mina and Morgana at the Heartbean, while ELM turns his airship toward the growing crisis.

Where we leave everyone

• Hubert: is cured, beyond the Lurker’s mental reach, and setting out with Nibbin.
• Regina: is alive but suspended in time, in JABB’s care.
• Catherine and her children: are safe in the hidden colony.
• Roderick and four older siblings: remain under enemy control.
• Jacques and Mina: face an unresolved confrontation beneath Hide Park.

The final quest

Hubert begins the final adventure healthy but with most of his family captive. Regina’s wish has also made him immune to the Lurker’s mental control. He reunites with Jacques, and their partnership becomes a shared effort to rescue the family rather than fulfill a dying boy’s final request.

JABB’s concern for Regina turns him against the Order. He helps recover the Peevestone and bring her out of captivity. Jacques wakes her from the crystal shell, though the debt from her wish remains. Catherine chooses to join the rescue while her children stay protected.

The plan reaches the ritual beneath Mount Ominous, but the Order has a way to use a sacrifice already made. Regina’s stasis debt supplies the surrendered life the rite needs, and Felgarath returns. He is horrified by what his followers have done. The heroes discover that Crimson, the controlling will he preserved in his magical network, is distinct from the resurrected man who now regrets his choices.

How it ends

Gwyneth’s surviving green magic provides a path out of bindings that otherwise pass suffering to another bearer. With the three Lively Relics and her allies’ help, Mina chooses release from Morgana. Morgana escapes into the deeper Heartbean network, but Mina regains control of herself. Jacques learns to support her decisions rather than make them for her.

The seven siblings reject the family’s inherited pattern of choosing who must suffer next. Working together, they open a second path through the bloodline network and break the Lurker’s control. Hubert asks for help rather than becoming another final sacrifice. Their father and the enthralled siblings are freed.

The family then confronts Ruprecht directly. The Elder Umbrella protects them, the Peevestone disrupts his commands, and the Cloak of Visibility exposes his desire to hurt the Veldins. Together they sever his remaining connections. The Lurker is unmade and vanishes beyond the living world.

Felgarath refuses Crimson’s offer of renewed dominion. He accepts responsibility without demanding forgiveness and chooses to stop sustaining his reconstructed body. He dies with Hubert and Jacques beside him. His body becomes part of a red-and-green tree: Gwyneth’s surviving magic contains Crimson, but does not destroy it. The survivors establish precautions and monitoring rather than treating the danger as finished.

The trilogy closes around a crowded family table. Hubert chooses time with his family over an immediate grand destiny. JABB is offered a place without having his past excused; Jacques and Mina belong there too. Beneath the mountain, Crimson remains a danger beyond the family’s victory.
