PEOPLES & TRANSFORMATIONS OF THE PENULTIMATE DAWN
Mals & Revs
Deprivation · Distortion · Exploitation · Corrupt Restoration
Mals
Mals are among the most marginalized people in the Realm. Their bodies have been distorted by the magical and spiritual conditions produced by the ancient binding of Earthman and Etherman natures. Some remain articulate and recognizably human; others lose speech, mobility, or familiar bodily form.
A Social Category as Well as a Condition
The Clans frequently treat Mals as servants, curiosities, disposable labor, or monsters. That prejudice becomes one of the series’ clearest moral failures. Characters who become physically altered—especially Sarhah—discover how quickly society’s judgment changes when appearance crosses the line it has labeled acceptable.
Revs
Revs are Mals remade through the Purple Aspect and corruptive Dusk Potation. Their deformities are refined into strength, their appearance becomes more symmetrical and unnaturally marked, and they emerge as powerful servants of the Ether Aspects.
The False Answer to a Real Need
The Rev transformation is dangerous precisely because it appears to solve something real. Dusk Potation offers immediate power and pleasure to a being suffering the Thirst, but it does not nourish the soul. Instead, it weaponizes the damage. The later return of Dawn Potation provides the opposite model: restoration rather than exploitation.
