CHARACTERS OF THE PENULTIMATE DAWN

Juliana

Queen of the Ethermen · Prisoner · Witness · Returned Sovereign

Queen Before the Binding

Juliana once ruled the Ethermen from the Orange Keep. Her reign belongs to a forgotten age when Earthmen and Ethermen existed as distinct peoples rather than as two natures forcibly joined within the same bodies.

Bound to Sarchat

Sarchat’s great binding is embodied literally in the preserved pair found within the Orange Keep. He clasps Juliana and surrenders almost all of his life into the spell. As long as the two remain joined, the races remain joined as well.

Decades of Imprisonment

When the attempt to undo the binding goes disastrously wrong, Juliana remains trapped alongside Evelet for decades. That long captivity gives Evelet access to a perspective the Clans had nearly erased, including a deeper understanding of the Hunger, the Thirst, and the Longing.

A Queen Set Free

Juliana’s release in The Longing completes the physical separation of Earthmen and Ethermen, but freedom does not erase centuries of suffering. Her anger at Rahim and her determination to protect her newly freed people make her an independent force rather than an automatic ally of the old religious order.
