PLACES OF THE PENULTIMATE DAWN · BOOK THREE SPOILERS
The Citadel
Ancient City · Western Stronghold · Remainder Fortress
The Western Counterpart
The Citadel is the ancient western counterpart to the Sanctuary. Where the Dark vessel’s city rises toward the sky, the Citadel’s design descends into the earth around a central spiraling pit ringed by tall structures.
Frieda’s Plan
Frieda and the Remainder preserve enough knowledge of the buried city to map its footprint on the plateau. Their preparation gives Azil a guide for using the combined powers of the Light Aspects to uncover and reconstruct the ancient ruins.
Raised in a Night
With magical amplification and teams marking the old foundations, Azil restores the city’s major structures before dawn. The feat transforms an exposed resistance force into a population with walls, battlements, and a defensible center.
Not a Return to the Old Clans
The Citadel is important because it does not recreate Scarlatti, Azura, or Dorian. It gives the Remainder a shared stronghold built from a deeper layer of history, helping the survivors imagine a political order not defined by the three hereditary Clans.
