FORBIDDEN MAGIC
Blood Magic
The taking of living Essence by force—one of the Realm’s oldest and most explicitly condemned magical practices.
Essence in Fresh Blood
Human blood retains magical potency for a short time after leaving the body. Ancient histories describe mages who exploited that fact, sometimes killing people and using the still-potent blood immediately to fuel spells of extraordinary strength.
Why It Is Forbidden
The Mind of Rahim treats blood magic as more than ordinary murder or misuse of spellcraft. The practice seizes power violently rather than receiving, refining, or exchanging Essence through the world’s established order. A passage preserved among the Seven Wraths of Rahim places blood magic among the gravest offenses known to the old religion.
Meckule
Azil records that his ancestor Meckule was said to have turned to blood magic in a period of madness after the murder of his mistress. The episode stains the memory of a man otherwise remembered for notable accomplishments and shows that even prominent figures were not immune to forbidden methods.
Zelvig & the Bells
The Acts of Returning also connect blood magic with Zelvig, whose attempt to seize the Seven Bells of Creation appears to have involved power strong enough to alter the land around Azureheim. Because the account is prophetic and highly stylized, the exact mechanics remain uncertain.
A Distortion of Exchange
Blood magic forms a dark mirror of ordinary magical exchange. Collection and offering amulets can gather or transfer Essence with consent; blood magic turns that same basic truth—that life carries power—into coercion.
