A Very Different Kind of Assignment
Elsere enters Xandir’s life when the High Seraph assigns the Destroying Angel to assist Q-PED, a cherubic division that oversees amorous interactions among mortals. Xandir expects weapons and destruction; Elsere expects patience, timing, and enough restraint not to ruin a budding relationship.
Experienced Beyond His Size
Elsere’s small cherubic form hides considerable experience. He understands celestial procedure, human courtship, demonic interference, and the specialized dart-based craft used by his order. His calm competence repeatedly undermines Xandir’s long habit of dismissing cherubs as ornamental or harmless.
From Irritant to Friend
The assignment forces Xandir to protect Phillip Fortuna and Sarah Fox while confronting a Sapper attack designed to destroy courage, hope, and connection. Over time, Xandir stops treating Elsere as a nuisance and finally calls him something far more difficult for Xandir to admit: a friend.

Elsere knowingly sacrifices himself in the final confrontation with the Sapper. He tells Xandir that some situations require one person to give himself for the good of many, then carries the weapon necessary to end the conflict into battle. His death becomes one of the clearest demonstrations of sacrificial love Xandir witnesses before the main novel.
