A Language Few Still Know

Johann encounters old records whose letters look familiar while the words remain completely foreign. Siegfried identifies the writing as the ancient language spoken by the first queen and remarks that few people can still read it.

Royal Records and Succession

The language is embedded in the kingdom’s oldest machinery of government. The hidden record explaining how to call a new queen states that a member of the Buchmuller bloodline must speak the necessary words in the ancient language to start the succession process deep beneath the castle.

Brigitte’s Unexplained Affinity

Brigitte repeatedly understands writing that others cannot. Early in the story she reads a mysterious note even though the language is not her normal one and Gwen sees only gibberish. In The Frozen Globe, Richard specifically seeks Brigitte because he knows she can translate the ancient language of the queens.

More Than Translation

By the climax of Book Two, Brigitte’s rapid speech shifts into the ancient language under extreme pressure. The books never reduce her gift to a simple classroom skill or provide a complete grammatical system, so the archive treats it as a real in-world language with a magical or hereditary connection that remains partly mysterious.

Not German

The ancient language of the queens is distinct from the German spoken on Earth. The novels place genuine German phrases beside this older tongue, making the difference between Earth language and Canticle language part of the mystery.
