A Note About the Name

The surviving records do not give the central city a stable proper name separate from the kingdom itself. This encyclopedia therefore uses the royal capital and the capital rather than inventing a city name that the chroniclers neglected to preserve.

The Center of Public Life

The capital is the political and ceremonial heart of the Beandom. It is where monarchs hold court, royal decrees become public policy, ambassadors request aid, heroes receive recognition, officials attempt to regulate magical problems, and villains discover that controlling a throne requires considerably more paperwork than stealing one.

The city’s exact streets and districts are not consistently named, but the record repeatedly returns to its palace, public approaches, court offices, performance spaces, security checkpoints, markets, residences, and roads leading outward to the rest of the realm. The capital is less important as a mapped collection of neighborhoods than as the place where the kingdom’s many peoples, professions, and rival claims meet.

Capital and Kingdom Are Not the Same Thing

The Crown speaks for the kingdom, but the capital never contains the whole Beandom. Farms depend on the River Magus. Pintoburg, Excaliburg, Worstashire, the Troll Barrens, the northern desert, giant territory, forests, islands, coastal settlements, and magical borderlands all maintain identities and interests that cannot be reduced to court policy.

This distinction becomes important whenever the palace assumes that a decree has solved a problem the rest of the realm has not yet heard about. Royal authority travels through roads, messengers, officials, soldiers, magical communications, alliances, and the willingness of distant communities to recognize the Crown.

The Capital as Stage

Major political acts in the Beandom are rarely private. Coronations, royal speeches, diplomatic feasts, musical performances, investigations, declarations, succession challenges, and acts of public heroism all depend on an audience. The palace ballroom and throne room therefore function as places of government and as stages where legitimacy must be performed.

This tradition reaches its most dangerous form in the Refried era, when the King’s Watch turns inspections into coordinated entertainment and JABB uses celebrity, music, bright uniforms, and legal language to make coercion appear festive.

A City Repeatedly Remade

The capital survives curses, magical blockades, political failures, the abandonment of the palace, the eruption of Mount Ominous, reconstruction, succession crises, and the eventual disappearance of the magical realms beneath the earth. Each age preserves part of what came before while changing what the capital means.

Chronicler’s note: The capital is where the kingdom gathers to be governed, entertained, protected, inspected, crowned, overthrown, and asked to applaud in the correct key.
